Product Description

From the Manufacturer

It should be easy to name 3 breeds of dogs--but can you do it under the pressure of 5 seconds twisting down, and with the other players staring at you, waiting for you to get flustered? Time's not on your side, so just say what comes to mind and risk ridiculous answers slipping as time twirls down on the unique twisted timer. It's all in good fun with the fast-paced game where you have to Just Spit it Out.

I bought this game recently with a coupon I got for Borders Bookstore. The object is simple - name three things that fit in a specific category in five seconds. Not as easy as it sounds, especially if the category is not your cup of tea. Sample categories are Name Three:

Army Generals
Produce Items
Dairy Products
U. S. astronauts
Deaceased Celebrities
Beach Boys songs
Dr. Seuss books
Things you do alone

The responses someone gave to the last one I can't print here. It can be a challenge. Here's the challenging part. If the first player cannot come up with three answers, it passes to the next player, who CANNOT repeat the answers already said. This could cause problems with categories that have a limit of answers, like Signs of the Zodiac. According to the rules, if the categories gets played by all players and no one gives three acceptable answers, the player who originally got the category gets it by default. One player who just didn't follow the Beach Boys couldn't complete that card, I aced it and got it.

You can play as many rounds as you like. A round is defined as everyone being given a category to start with. Naming three answers gets the card for you and play passes to the next player. I originally thought you kept going, but a call to Patch Products said no. This isn't made too clear in the rules, in my opinion. NOTE: if more than one player misses a category, the next category begins with the next person whose turn it would be after the last player. This may not necessarily be the person who got the card. It may sound strange but once you play the game, it will be clear to you.

The one with the most cards at the end wins. The timer makes a strange noise when it's turned over.

I am a party game snob, so I love 'em and I always see the flaws.

LET START WITH THE THINGS I DO LIKE ABOUT THIS GAME:

* The rules are simple.

* The game play is snappy and gets your heart rate up.

* There are a decent number of questions (578)

* Many of the cards are genuinely funny and challenging. For example, name 3 things you shouldn't do at a funeral, or name 3 prime numbers.

THESE ARE THE THINGS I'M NOT SO CRAZY ABOUT:

* Too many of the cards are boring, like name 3 kitchen appliances. The only thing that makes this a challenge is you have 5 seconds, but that's not good enough.

* The really cool timer broke after two uses.

* Here is the biggest problem I have. Whether an answer is acceptable is subjective. I cringe when I see this feature in a game because it invariably leads to arguing, and here, time spent looking things up. I firmly believe the golden rule of party games is to avoid subjectivity.

These examples illustrate the subjectivity problem.

* The card asks you to name 3 "All-Inclusive Resorts." First, I'm not sure what that even means. Second, who's to say? According to the game rules, the group decides.

* A more "objective" cards asks you to name 3 of the 13 original colonies. At least those are answers that objectively exist and won't lead to fighting.

Overall, I think this is a fun game with a few flaws. I have the very same comments about the game "Name 5" which is basically the same game as "5 Second Rule" but without the 5-second snazzy timer. Name 5 Game

The Patch 5 Second Rule Just Spit It Out game was the hit of our Christmas 2010 game-playing. Everyone played --- ages 5 to 65. It became contagious -- we'd make up our own categories while in the car, getting ready for bed, etc. I'd highly recommend this game.

This toy was a huge hit at my in-laws on Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. There were people of all ages and backgrounds, and everyone loved it. There is an awesome little timer and a box of cards. The object is to list three of some subject listed on the card - in five seconds! Some subjects are very specific (Name three NHL teams), and some are open-ended (Name three things to do when the electricity goes out), but there is really something for everyone. We love it!

We played this at Pizza Hut while waiting for a pizza once. My 10 yr old was excited about it. So we got it for Christmas for her. We've tried playing it several times. Many of the questions are just to difficult for her. For a group of adults it's fun. But not meant for kids really. The cards ask questions that they just don't have the knowledge for. She's been rather disappointed with it.

I love games where everyone is involved all the time, and you're not just sitting there waiting for your turn. This is one of those games! You have to pay attention, 'cause if the first person can not name three things in five seconds -- like "furniture stores" of "reality tv shows" -- that their card asks for, then the second person gets five seconds to name three, and if they fail then the third person goes, and so on and so forth. The big catch is, once an answer has been said, it can not be repeated. So if the first person names two reality tv shows -- for instance, "Biggest Loser" and "Survivor" -- then no one following them can use those answers.

This game is fast-paced and loads of fun! We played it over the Christmas holiday, and everyone from the three teens to the four adults had a blast. Super simple to follow the rules and great fun to play!
