Review

"Orloff tried to stave her intuitions off during medical school until she found herself 'trapped' in a profession that was itself dependent on dispensing drugs to silence the spirit...To listen only to the mind and not the soul is, Orloff believes, a form of insanity"
—San Francisco Chronicle

"An exemplary and eloquently written story that makes it easy for nonbelievers in intuition to believe. You must read this book."
—Psychology Today

"Judith Orloff is a talented writer, and her book moves like a thriller… Orloff's real goal is to awaken your sense that you too are an intuitive --- indeed, that we all are --- and that you can sharpen your gifts. If you've ever had an experience that gives you chills to remember, if you ever find that you 'know' facts about people they would never have told you, this book will be a great relief and a door to more… Forgive me my moment of intuition, but this book feels right."
—Jesse Kornbluth, Huffington Post

"An intensely personal spriitual odyssey. Dr. Orloff's self-portrait as an intuitive psychiatrist is filled with love and a truth born of an extraordinary gift."
—Norman Lear, Writer, producer

"Fascinating...Dr. Orloff writes with wisdom and humility about her emergence as a physician with extraordinary abilities. Highly recommended."
—Dean Ornish, M.D., Author, Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease

"Poignant…courageous and refreshing. Must reading for all."
—Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 Astronaut, Author, Way of the Explorer

"One of those rare books that has the potential to create shock waves and revolutions within a profession. An inspiring, lofty statement from a very courageous physician."
—Larry Dossey, MD, Author, Healing Words

"We are far more than we have allowed ourselves to be. Judith Orloff is to be commended for helping us understand that simple truth."
—Louise Hay, Author of You Can Heal Your Life

"A book to re-read...a story that gives one pause...Orloff tells her story with conviction and a gentle, literate style that wins the reader to her narrative."
—Napra Review

"Second Sight reads like a thriller. It is a page turner ...inspiring...controversial. This pioneering book shares the struggles and well-won successes of a courageous physician who fights against a skeptical medical system to validate the power of intuition. You will find a new friend in Judith as her writing style is as intimate as if she was talking to you in her living room."
—Joan Borysenko Phd Author, Mending the Mind, Minding the Spirit

More About the Author

"Dr. Orloff voices the message that intuition works as a potent therapeutic force that can help us lead smarter, saner lives. She is a serene maverick." --USA Today

Transforming the face of psychiatry, Judith Orloff MD asserts that we are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so perceptive that it can tell us how to heal -- and prevent -- illness. Yet intuition and spirituality are the very aspects of our wisdom usually disenfranchised from traditional health care.

Dr. Orloff advocates "a democracy of healing," wherein every aspect of our being is granted a vote in the search for total health. It is our birthright, both as health-care givers and health-care recipients, to reclaim our intuition to build energy and well-being. In response to her work, The Los Angeles Times calls Dr. Orloff "a prominent energy-based healer."

Dr. Orloff is accomplishing for psychiatry what physicians like Dean Ornish and Mehmet Oz have done for mainstream medicine -- she is proving that the links between physical, emotional, and spiritual health can't be ignored. Dr. Orloff has spoken at medical schools, hospitals, the American Psychiatric Association, Fortune Magazine's Most Powerful Women Summit, and alternative and traditional health forums -- venues where she presents practical intuitive tools to doctors, patients, and everyday people.

As a board-certified psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry at UCLA, Dr. Orloff draws upon her own intuitive abilities to help her patients and workshop participants. Dr. Orloff's latest book "The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life" (Harmony Books, 2014) describes the power of letting go in everyday life, health, and wellness--an enlivening and sane alternative to pushing, forcing, and over controlling people and situations. In addition, her struggles acknowledging and then finally embracing her gift of intuition are chronicled in "Second Sight" (Warner Books). Her second book, "Dr. Judith Orloff's Guide to Intuitive Healing" (Three Rivers Press) shows how breakthroughs in healing our body, emotions, and sexuality can be accomplished by listening to intuition. "Positive Energy," which has been translated into 23 languages, takes a probing look at the American epidemic of exhaustion and how we can reverse it using specific strategies to build energy and combat draining people. Her New York Times Bestseller, "Emotional Freedom" describes how to transform negative emotions into positive ones with specific techniques.

It's like I can take a deep breath and relax now. Someone once asked me "How do you feel when you enter a room where there's a lot of fighting and anger?" My immediate response was: "I recoil and want to run out of there." I thought everybody felt this way. Granted we all feel things up to a certain level, but the notion that I feel more than most never occurred to me. Doesn't everyone? I thought. Learning I was not alone in my experiences was a huge relief and revelation to me. When I read Dr. Orloff's book I felt I had found me. I now knew who I was and could now just simply enjoy what once seemed like a curse. Feeling everything like I have been up to date without understanding it is "crazy making." I now realized no, it's a blessing, I have been given a whole 'nother level of awareness and depth. It is powerful. Hearing Dr. Orloff explain it through sharing her life- it blew the barn doors open. She talks openly about all her experiences as well as how she deeply respects her gifts and how she has combined these with traditional methodologies. Yes, there is a feeling of "safety" that she has credentials when reading this, but for me the true safety comes in how Dr. Orloff has chosen to use her gifts and live her life. She deeply respects what she has and is grateful for it. She does not misuse what she has and adds seriousness and credibility to her spiritual gifts.

I bought a copy of this book for my sister as she feels things on the hyper-sensitive scale as I. My sister gets massive migraines and has been taking medication to manage this. After reading Dr. Orloff's story and learned how she went through a phase of medicating herself to "escape" until she new what to do with what she had been given, I related this to my sister.

Don't walk, run to buy Judith Orloff's book. Judith tells her personal story revealing the developmental stages and steps she took in her "coming out" as an intuitive healer.

The author takes professional and personal risk in revealing her intuitive gifts through her story telling. Judith hid her intuitions behind closed doors during her medical training and practice in an attempt to maintain her professional medical image. Judith was born to physician parents who regarded her intuitive gifts as something to be kept secret. As a young woman Judith took part in research that smacked of "woo woo". After medical training she entered into the more conservative aspects of being a physician attempting to block her own nature and ultimately finding that she could not maintain that stance. For her own good and ultimately for the good of her patients (one of whom attempted suicide but lived)she found the her own unique path to acceptance not only claiming her intuitive gifts but sharing them with others as paths to healing and transformative change.

I recently read Second Sight, and found it to be uplifting, honest, candid - and "gutsy". By that, I mean that there are many of us in health care who have been aware at some level that there was a "gut" feeling that helped us make the right decisions with our patients - whether we were consciously aware of it or not. Her story resonated with me on so many levels - I am a nurse practitioner in women's health, with 30 years experience. I have always been aware of my "gut" feeling (which we now know hooks into the brain), and have relied on it through the years when making decisions about a patient's care, and it has never let me down. It has allowed me to really communicate with my patients, and "check" things with them to see if we both seem to be on the same page. If I get a "knowing" that I need to go forward with further testing, that is what I do; if that "knowing" urges me to ask more questions, or take a different direction, I do. Dr. Orloff has brought to the forefront the importance of our intuitive gifts, and knowing, that as human beings we ALL have. As health care providers, if we "re-awaken" this intuition we are all born with, but have managed to stifle through our culture- this is a "win-win" for our patients and ourselves. Kudos to Dr. Orloff for having the courage, and "guts" to go forward with this wonderful work, and gift to mankind.

Judith Orloff, M.D. teaches us that it is okay to trust our instincts and feelings instead of denying them. In a society that tries to force us to explain every occurrence and ignore those we can't explain, Dr. Orloff's book is refreshing, comforting and eye-opening.

Using her own experiences feeling "different" and even guilty for her "Second Sight", Orloff helps us to understand that sometimes we do hold more of the answers than we realize. She teaches us to trust ourselves. She helps guide us towards our inner peace, our strength and our truth.

Judith Orloff is a board certified psychiatrist and professor of psychiatry so she has a clear view of both the world of science and explanations, and the world of intuition and inner guidance. Dr. Orloff knows the importance of balance in our hearts and minds as well as in our lives. This is a journey she struggled with through life and found "the freedom to soar as high and as deep as (her) spirit will take (her), to forcefully and with pride speak (her) own truth."

Second Sight by Judith Orloff, M.D. teaches the reader valuable lessons to live life. It's definitely a book everyone should read.
