3.0 out of 5 stars This book leans heavily toward religion toward the end.
The more I got into this book, the more I tended to doubt the credentials and the credulity of this young psychiatrist. Like "The Road Less Travelled, it led you on with words of wisdom and food for thought, but kept on going toward meditation, prayer and religion

I've been reading up on the subject of intuition, especially as it relates to healing. Someone recommended this book to me; although I'm usually put off by the term "psychic," I felt that Dr. Orloff's credentials were impressive enough to lend some credibility to what she had to say. The first half of the book is mostly biographical, but makes an important point: what she calls the psychic (I prefer "intuitive") kept resurfacing in her life no matter how much she resisted it, and when she finally learned to integrate it with her personal and professional life it enriched both. In the second half she writes more generally about the psychic and how it affects people's lives, and I was impressed with her levelheadedness and good sense: being psychic doesn't make a person "special," and like all gifts this ability can be used for good or misused for personal gain. Her warnings about bad psychics, and those who try to control their clients through fear, were well taken. Also, I feel that her criticism of traditional psychology is right on: psychic experience, and spirituality in general, have been viewed for too long as symptoms of mental illness rather than health. Her viewpoint is not so much "religious" as spiritual, and, although that may be too much for hard-core materialists, I think most readers can relate to it. I felt that the concluding chapters were rather long and repetitious, but otherwise I found the book readable and thought-provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can breathe now, May 30, 2007

It's like I can take a deep breath and relax now. Someone once asked me "How do you feel when you enter a room where there's a lot of fighting and anger?" My immediate response was: "I recoil and want to run out of there." I thought everybody felt this way. Granted we all feel things up to a certain level, but the notion that I feel more than most never occurred to me. Doesn't everyone? I thought. Learning I was not alone in my experiences was a huge relief and revelation to me. When I read Dr. Orloff's book I felt I had found me. I now knew who I was and could now just simply enjoy what once seemed like a curse. Feeling everything like I have been up to date without understanding it is "crazy making." I now realized no, it's a blessing, I have been given a whole 'nother level of awareness and depth. It is powerful. Hearing Dr. Orloff explain it through sharing her life- it blew the barn doors open. She talks openly about all her experiences as well as how she deeply respects her gifts and how she has combined these with traditional methodologies. Yes, there is a feeling of "safety" that she has credentials when reading this, but for me the true safety comes in how Dr. Orloff has chosen to use her gifts and live her life. She deeply respects what she has and is grateful for it. She does not misuse what she has and adds seriousness and credibility to her spiritual gifts.

I bought a copy of this book for my sister as she feels things on the hyper-sensitive scale as I. My sister gets massive migraines and has been taking medication to manage this. After reading Dr. Orloff's story and learned how she went through a phase of medicating herself to "escape" until she new what to do with what she had been given, I related this to my sister. She opened up to me and told me more things that she had experienced as a child. I now hope that my sister will be able to understand herself an accept and enjoy these gifts she has been given.

As far as I'm concerned Dr. Orloff is opening doors for people and allowing everyone to relax as well as respect a whole arena of the human experience that typically gets shunned, and until very recently even went punished. And the biggest tragedy of all is that these gifts have gone unused, denied and ignored by many and dismissed as sillyness or even crazyness of some kind. With this openess and understanding of what is really going on many can now not waste what they have been blessed with and can live incredibly rich, powerful lives. There's nothing to reject or push away. In fact, this is cause for celebration. Thank you for sharing your story, Dr. Orloff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Becoming Authentic, May 17, 2005
This review is from: Second Sight (Paperback)
Second Sight is a double feature not to be missed. The book begins with the eloquent unveiling of the life of Judith Orloff, told to me as if she were sitting in my living room, and ends with her giving me the inner and outer tools to help me sense the psychic messages we all receive daily but do not always recognize, that lead to a heightened awareness of spirit, personal freedom, and increased love of self, and others.

What stands out to me in this book is the genuineness of the story, the way it is told. Judith's unique approach weaves and interweaves the actual events with the learnings that come from them. By doing so she is showing me that I, too, am an intuitive, if I will only listen to my own creation. And she provides a map, based on her own path, to take me into a world I could not otherwise navigate. "Envision a grander step of what is possible," she says. "There's no ceiling to what we can learn." Second Sight is a powerful discourse delivered with a gentle voice, and its teachings have enabled me to put miles and miles behind me on my journey toward authenticity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching and heartfelt story of acceptance and discovery, October 2, 1999

I am a professional in the computer business and also share the gift of the psychic and the high sensitivity that Judith describes in her book. I'm in the process of reading the book for a second time and must say that I feel as if we are brother and sister after reading this wonderful book.

Her very direct writing style, and first person account with sometimes brutal honesty is refreshing and an act of candor and love not seen in many books on this subject. She has successfully placed the psychic gift in its true context, that of a God given gift to be cherished and used to better the lives of your fellow human and yourself. I can only hope that her book becomes required reading for all medical, spiritual, and even educational disciplines so that people who have the gift can be recognized early in life, and to receive the help and training they need to successfully use their gifts to hopefully help others on their paths.

Judith - you are a sweetheart of a lady, and I'm sincerely hoping to see another book from you...

In Second Sight, Judith Orloff, M.D. takes us to the heart and soul of her search to validate her psychic gifts. This gifted writer and healer shares her story, and gentle spirit as she becomes a psychiatrist, to give credibility to her psychic work.

Reading Second Sight was like taking a long walk with an old friend, and wishing it would never end. Although I finished the book, the journey has just begun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart warming journey through a psychic life..., July 20, 2006
This review is from: Second Sight (Paperback)
I have just finished reading Dr. Judith Orloff's book Second Sight where she chronicles early life confusion and bewilderment regarding her intuitive/psychic capability. Then, in the end, Dr. Orloff leads us to her full acceptance of herself, these gifts, and ways. Today, she incorporates her intuitive sense into her role as a psychiatrist. It should be noted that Dr. Orloff is board-certified. It should also be noted that an individual cannot become a psychiatrist without first becoming a medical doctor. It is this groundedness, this knowledge of healing in all its facets Dr. Orloff brings to her own healing through sharing with us her evolution in Second Sight.

At times, I was profoundly moved by some of Dr. Orloff's passages, both metaphorically and in her writing. At times, I was enlightened by connections she experienced that relate to my own life. At other times, I just felt a sense of knowing... a feeling of coming home, ... to me..., during the reading.

Should you or someone you know share in a confusion, in a journey of the psychic or simply be intrigued by these elements of this life, I can only bring this work to your attention. It is up to you, your guides, your strength that will determine whether or not you pursue further study in these matters via Dr. Orloff and her book Second Sight.

If something I have said triggers a knowing in you that something larger is calling you, then perhaps Second Sight is part of that call.

From Dr. Orloff in Second Sight

"A true healer's skill lies in kindling your power."

Another quote that harmonized with me,
"...sustained healing can take place only when a teacher ignites resources we already have within, not if he professes to do it for us, creating a false dependency."

On the well balanced psychic,

"Her power is internalized, integrated. She doesn't have to flaunt it. As she uses her gift discerningly, radiating an understated sense of calm, we see before us someone with no need to glorify herself, someone who is profoundly simple."

Also:

"Use deja vu (feelings/experiences) as a cue something very special is going on."

Dr. Judith Orloff writes with the instincts of a true healer..., openly, ...with candor...
and respect for her own humanity and that of her readers.

I loved this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Second Sight (Paperback)
I discovered Dr. Orloff's book by accident. Then again, after reading her work, especially Second Sight, it may not have been an accident after all. Besides being incredibly interesting and informative, the book is held together by Dr. Orloff's vulnerability and risk-sharing in being so open with her readers about her own life. One walks away with the impression that the author is serious about sharing her expriences with others, as a means to encourage others to explore their own spiritual and psychic gifts. I recommend this book for anyone who is willing to explore the depths of spirituality and psychic experiences. I am thankful to have encountered Dr. Orloff and her work. Her books are a rare gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars A courageous story, October 18, 2007
This review is from: Second Sight (Paperback)
I have been reading many different books dealing with healing, spiritual growth and energy medicine. Most have a variety of resources to offer and to guide you. In her book, Judith goes beyond techniques. She reveals the difficulties of growing up with a spiritual gift. And what makes her story so different from others is that Judith tells not only the beautiful side of what such a gift can give you, but also the challenges and the incredible responsibility that is imbedded in having psychic abilities.

Judith's book gives you her own story in a clear, passionate and courageous way. She is a pioneer in revealing what most people may not understand; and even reject in an academic and professional setting. It is not easy in such a setting to advance your career and serve others in a meaningful way acknowledging that you have psychic abilities. Judith has been able to do that and has found a way to show others that is possible to have a career without ignoring or rejecting your psychic abilities.

In a time, that many are trying to ¨have psychic abilities ¨ it is a blessing to find someone who shows that those gifts must be developed with a purpose different than just being special or have some power. As she correctly points out those abilities must be embedded in a deep connection with the divine within each of us.

This is what I said.. after giving the book a five star.

Just finished this book "Second Sight" several minutes ago.
While reading; it has changed my life immediately.
The words in the book are "Magic (the only word that I can think of that fits)." The words in the book are alive and become alive in another persons intuitive self.
The book is a gift to mankind and far exceeds the Apollo and Shuttle programs that I have worked on.
This book is a guide to ones inner space.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rebel with a cause!, February 8, 2005
This review is from: Second Sight (Paperback)
Anyone with a rebellious child should read Dr. Judith Orloff's autobiography SECOND SIGHT. It just might ease your fear and give you faith that everything will work out fine.

As a lifelong rebel myself, I'm convinced that a little "rage against the machine" can be beneficial. With age and insight, rage transforms to love, and the resulting energy transfusion can be enormous.

I recommend this book highly!
