5.0 out of 5 stars It's either genius or madness., May 8, 1999

This review is from: Second Hand Smoke and the Lesser Magoo (Crowtet , No 2) (Paperback)
The fourth play in Wellman's Crowtet Cycle, "The Lesser Magoo" shows the tragedy of esoteric knowledge and the language that accompanies it. It contrasts the normal with the strange, the coterie with the masses, the usual(ists) with the unusual(ists). It is a fascinating and bizarre commentary on the marginalization of people by academia, big-business, the aristocracy, and religion.

Buy it. Read it. Love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plays in print!, July 17, 1998

This review is from: Second Hand Smoke and the Lesser Magoo (Crowtet , No 2) (Paperback)
Okay, as I type this, the book isn't published yet. But I saw "The Lesser Magoo" in L.A. back in Feb. 1997, produced by Bottom's Dream at the Ivy Substation (Culver City). An awesome, powerful production. The first section reminded one of Wellman's "7 Blowjobs," and the second section was akin to "The Hyacincth McCaw." The third...well, who knows. It's Mac Wellman, that's all I can really say. There is no one like Wellman. He's one of our greatest experimental playwrights, which means he's still quite obscure and not a lot of people understand him.
