Book Description

November 1, 2008 Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture
In the second volume of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (CCSS), George Montague offers a Catholic pastoral commentary on the letters to Timothy and Titus, presenting sound exegesis followed by reflection on the pastoral, theological, and practical applications of the text.

The CCSS offers readable, informative commentaries from the best of contemporary Catholic scholarship to help readers rediscover the Word of God as a living word in which God himself is present. Each commentary relates Scripture to life, is faithfully Catholic, and is supplemented by features designed to help readers understand the Bible more deeply and use it more effectively in teaching, preaching, evangelization, and other forms of ministry. This series is perfect for professional and lay leaders engaged in parish ministry, lay Catholics interested in serious Bible study, and Catholic students.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"In preparing for the international Synod of Bishops on 'The Sacred Scriptures in the Life and Mission of the Church,' Pope Benedict XVI reminded the Church that a prayerful study of the Scriptures is at the heart of the Church's renewal. The new Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture promises to directly serve that purpose. Drawing on sound biblical scholarship, the commentaries present the reader with the rich harvest of that study, reflecting on the message of the biblical text and engaging the life of faith from a Catholic perspective."--Donald Senior, CP, president, Catholic Theological Union

"When the Scripture is read in the liturgy, it is heard as a living voice. But when expounded in a commentary, it is too often read as a document from the past. This fine new series unites the ancient and the contemporary by offering insight into the biblical text--verse by verse--as well as spiritual application to the lives of Christians today."--Robert Louis Wilken, University of Virginia

"By bringing together historical background, exegetical interpretation, church tradition, theological reflection, and pastoral application, this series promises to enkindle thoughtful discussion about the implications of the New Testament for lived Christian faith in the Church today. Its accessible format and multi-angled approach offer a model for teaching and ministry."--Katherine Hayes, Seminary of the Immaculate Conception

"This series is a landmark achievement in theological interpretation of Scripture in and for the Church. Everything about it is inviting and edifying. It is a wonderful gift to the Catholic Church and a model for the rest of us. Highly recommended for all!"--Michael J. Gorman, St. Mary's Seminary and University, Baltimore

"The Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture is an ideal tool for living our faith more deeply. This extraordinary resource combines superior scholarship and a vivid, accessible style that will serve the interested layperson and the serious scholar equally well. It feeds both the mind and the heart and should be on the shelf of every committed Catholic believer. I highly recommend it."--Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap, Archbishop of Denver

I was delighted to find this fine book at our Parish Adoration Chapel a few months ago. After many years of working together with men, both young and old, seeking to live our lives according to Scripture, it is a delight to have this useful work. Fr. Montague writes in a style that is very clear and understandable, and provides good cross-references for further reading. The Index of Pastoral Topics is particularly useful for us ordinary people. I think I will attempt to collect the entire series.

I recently used this book by Father Montague in a class I took and in a class I taught. So my comments will include the comments of many of those who were in the class I facilitated.

First as a student, I found the book to be a very thorough treatment of the Pastoral Epistles, particularly in the cross references to Old Testament, New Testament and Catechism. When I put in the extra effort to pursue these references, I achieved a greater understanding and depth, not only in what Father Montague was saying about the particular passage, but also in the way in which the Church was applying what Paul's recommendations were to Timothy and Titus in establishing the new Church.

From a teaching experience, I can share that the questions posted on the publisher's website to be used with the book in a class environment could have benefited, perhaps, by a direct application of these cross references in order to answer fully the questions. The questions are appropriate for students of Scripture who are less familiar with the Bible, as they are more "Scriptural Application" kinds of questions, rather than in-depth study questions.

Some of those attending my class at the Parish were able to share personal situations and thoughts in a Scriptural context, and enjoyed the kind of "soul-searching" (words of one of the attendees) discussion the questions provoked. Others were hoping for more directed, in-depth study. All agreed, however, that the material in the book was well written, thought-provoking, and led to a more profound understanding of the early church and how it has developed. As another attendee stated,"I understand why the development of the magisterium was so important in keeping the young Church aligned with the Apostolic teaching."

I would recommend Father Montague's book for both a personal library addition, and as a source book for facilitating a class.

Author brings a lot of scholarship and insight from a Catholic perspective into these short New Testament books. The exegesis of the holy writing is spoiled for me by speculation about the authorship of these books. This and the other title (The Gospel of Mark by Dr. Mary Healy) are books that I want on my shelf for future re-reading and meditation, along with the other titles that will be appearing in this series by Baker Academic.
