5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking Open Scripture for Today's Christians, May 10, 2006
This review is from: First and Second Timothy, Titus, Philemon (New Collegeville Bible Commentary: New Testament) (Paperback)
This work, as others in the New Collegeville Bible Commentary series, provides a verse - by - verse examination of its subject. The layout is an excellent study aid: the reading, with boldface subheadings, runs across the top of each page, and the commentary, with related bold headings, appears below.

Keegan, a professor of theology at Providence College, begins each section by introducing the author of the letter and linking it to the others in this volume and to Christian practice over time. We learn, for instance, that 1 Timothy challenges the contemporary reader to engage society within the context of the gospel message. And the Second Letter to Timothy, Keegan says, "speaks powerfully to a modern culture" on the value of loyalty, fidelity, and suffering for the sake of the gospel. The Letter to Titus, while accepting the institution of slavery, recognizes the tension between the gospel message and slavery and "calls for a reordering of relationships on a higher plane than those possible within secular society."

With this emphasis on the timelessness of the scripture messages, the insights of the commentary itself, and the discussion questions provided, Keegan's work is an excellent resource for individuals and groups interested in bible study.
