4.0 out of 5 stars ...a dark journey?, March 9, 2008
This review is from: Second Wave (Audio CD)
...I have to admit I was rather ignorant of this purchase the first time I bought it...I bought on the strength of the song medea and the really bizarre video...

...of course after one listen I lost interest...I felt that every song had the exact same air about them (predictable dark and eerie)...but of course after listening to it a few months later...it felt much more original...

...this band hail from Sweden...with the guitarist from Cult of Luna also helping the process...do they surpass Cult of Luna? Um...not in my opinion but their sound is definetely dark and progressive...and the singer has a slight hint of Thom Yorke falsetto in his voice...

Guillotine 9/10: Starts with some very dark sound affects followed by the low sounds of a guitar and bass...then the singer comes in (slightly lower then usual but trust me his voice isn't that deep)...with lyrics like "Only one thing left to do/I can hurt someone like you"...then with a bit of cello mixed in this song makes for a very dark beginning...

Stop making speeches 9/10: The guitars get louder and drumming gets slightly faster...yet the singer keeps a very piano (aka soft not the other piano) falsetto...but then he gradually builds up and the guitars explode with him falsetto singing the chorus (which has the title of the song in...personally I find that predictable but it's been done much worse)...and this happens a few times until the song fades out too...

If all else fails 9/10: This one is definetely a grower...it starts of with the usual falsetto from the singer and an eerie drone from the accompanying instruments; then the instruments explode in the chorus but thesinger still has the same tone about him...like he's trying to cope with the mental pain inside him...if all else were to fail...

Medea 9/10: The video is very bizarre and interesting (someone turns into a tree?) but like the other songs it's go quiet and then explode in the chorus...it's an obvious single but also stands out well...and there's some good guitaring near the end.

Hyenas 10/10: The first time I heard this track I had no interest for it whatsoever. Yes I thought the pianos were eerie but it sounded like the singer was moaning on about nothing...then I listen to it while going to sleep and it lulls me quite nicely...and again some good guitaring...probably the best song for me at the moment but it changes every now and then.

Through Walls 9/10: Another song that does the get quiet and explode in the chorus...but this chorus is very beautiful...both dark and promising...like the light at the end of a bee hive (?)...the guitaring is similar to other songs but it still builds a very good atmosphere.

Like Coming Home 10/10: The longest song if I remember correctly...and what a great song it is...it starts off very quiet "Just like rain hits the ground" and then it explodes...and goes quiet again...but by this point you should have accepted this form of structure and for those who do...you will be blessed with the gift of this beautiful beautiful song...

Asleep/Last Call/1909.08.04 9/10: Why am I rating all these songs together? Because by this point I have heard it all before and most of it sounds the same...yes there's the difference that some are slightly more heavy and some are more quieter but besides that...more or less the same...but that doesn't mean you should skip these three tracks...oh no this is an album that needs to progress and without these songs in between the execution of the next song just wouldn't be the same...

One of us must hang 9/10: Again rather samey to the other stuff but it ends very well...with a gradual fade out of guitars into nothingness...wow...

...anyway if you like this sort of dark music (cult of luna is much better but they still had a good try) buy this...I think these guys have a very good future ahead of them...
