Book Description

January 1, 1987 0894070436 978-0894070433 Paper edition
The horrors of Bataan and hopes for the American Dream formed the emotional backdrop for the second wave of Filipino immigration to the United States. In this second installment in a three-volume series, Caridad Concepcion Vallangca continues the work of her late husband Roberto Vallangca by documenting and preserving this crucial but little-studied episode in American history. Vallangca, herself a second wave immigrant who served as a third lieutenant in the Philippine underground resistance army during WWII, brings personal insight and love to the telling of personal oral histories from fellow second wave immigrants. This second wave of immigration, unlike the first, included a significant number of women; this volume is especially powerful as an illumination of the Filipina immigrant experience.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Filipinos are often referred to as the forgotten Asian-Americans. Based on her experiences as an immigrant and on interviews with nearly 50 others, Vallangca explores the human dimensions of the Filipino-American experience. This is part of a three-volume study; volume 1 was written by Vallangca's husband, Roberto (Pinoy: the first wave). Specialists will fault Vallangca for unsystematic and uncritical use of interviews; still, this is a useful work, covering background and context of immigration, discrimination, differences between male and female immigrants, and role in the professions.
