Format: Hardcover
This is a very well written history of World War II starting on September 1, 1939. Although the author is French he does not hesitate to expose the mistakes of the French and the Allies in general during the early stages of the war, without unduly praising the Germans. He describes very factually the strengths and weaknesses of each side, and goes into great detail over the movements and manoeuvers of the various military formations. The treatment (in two volumes) tracks the war in all the fronts including Europe, North Africa, the Eastern Front, the Atlantic, the Pacific and Southeast Asia. The pictures are also abundant though many of them have reappeared in various other publications since then.

Probably the greatest disadvantage of the book is that it was written in 1965 when some aspects of the War were still classified such as the plans formulated on the Soviet side, the terms of surrender for Italy and the U.S. findings on the action of the French resistance.

This is a must read for any student of military history IF you can find an English edition. One of my favorite books; I have read it over a dozen times over the last 20 years.
