You're missing out..., December 9, 2010
This review is from: Seconds Away (Audio CD)
I don't even remember how I found out about these guys, but I've had Seconds Away for about 5 years now, I pull it out and listen to it quite a bit. These guys came out after Eminem had hit big, and it IS initially hard not to compare Adeem to Em, mostly because of the whiteboy thing, and the tone of his voice. But he's on some more introspective stuff and the rhyming style is completely different, so its not a copy - like it or hate it, he's got his own unique thing.
Musically, this is AWESOME. The random samples and serious groove of these tracks is just amazing (like when they've got Steve Martin doing a live comic routine, for like 20 seconds of a song, and it works SO WELL!). Sometimes the music borders on beautiful, I mean this. I have always been a fan of albums (not just "songs"), and especially when the tracks are artfully run together, like the whole thing is a complete work of art on its own and not just "a collection of songs". I'll mention Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, NIN's The Downward Spiral as examples of just classic albums, complete works of art regardless of the "singles" (IMO). The other album I'll mention, and this is one of my absolute favorites, is Public Enemies' Fear of a Black Planet, and in a softer sense, this album reminds me of that, in that the groove is there, and the instrumentation and sampling is just visionary and virtuosic. It does go on a little too long, but at the same time, I can't think of any tracks to cut - even the instrumental tracks toward the end are interesting and seem to tell some kind of story, in their own way. (And its not like Eminem albums aren't always 8 songs too long...)
Truly, a great album, too bad these guys have seemed to give it up. I hope people discover this someday, you guys in Glue should be damned proud of what you've created here.
