Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- Donald and his friend Matt, who is deaf and taught Donald sign language, formed the "Flying Fingers" club to solve mysteries. Here, the case involves a stolen necklace, and takes place at a residential school for the deaf, where Donald is visiting Matt. Andrews uses the story to make valid points about how deaf people, and others who are "different," are often treated in our society. Unfortunately, her good intentions get in the way of the mystery. Readers are shown how Donald feels left out when Matt and his friends sign too fast for him to understand, and just in case they missed the point, Matt tells Donald, "Now you see how it feels. When you're talking to your hearing friends, I get left out." Several boys at the school make it clear that they dislike Donald and Saleem, a new foreign student, because they are different. The author's need to teach a lesson is obvious, and she concentrates on this at the expense of the characters and story. --Elizabeth Mellett, Brookline Public Library, MA
