One of the very best family films of the year, maybe the decade.,
By
This review is from: Secret of the Cave (DVD)
"Secret of the Cave" is an outstanding film that takes place in Scotland. It was put together as a college project by Southern Adventist University and the viewer will have no doubt that all those connected have a great career ahead of them. It is not a film that pushes any one faith or doctrine other than how we can relate to each other and to God. Unlike so many films made by beginners, this film is very professional and there is no way any thing connected in its making can be faulted. The extras alone are worth the price. I fully applaud this project and hope the school and the young people involved will continue the good work. We need more Christian film makers like this.

Just purchased and viewed this film for the first time. This will make you want to travel to Ireland! Truly breathtaking vistas are faithful to what we enjoyed on our trip.
The film is an interesting look into the life of a small village that is truly a community. The plot involves a mystery surrounding the death of a local villager, and the strange happenings that follow during and immediately following the funeral. I recommend this for the whole family!

I thought this was a great family movie! The scenery was breathtaking and the little Irish village where it was filmed was quaint. The movie has a mystery that has you wondering to the end. I thought the actors did an excellent job, and I can see why this movie received the Heartland Crystal Heart Award. It has a good moral and I would like to see more films like this. I have bought some of the DVD's and am going to give them as Christmas gifts. We need some wholesome viewing like this out there for a change! I would recommend this to anyone and give it an A+ rating!

I remember reading the book as I was growing up, by Arthur Maxwell, which the movie is based on, so I was anxious to see the movie.
The movie was very well done, set in with beautiful Ireland. One would never know from watching the movie that it was done by mostly college students, making their first feature-length film. One minor nitpick is that one of the main actors' accent was kind of strong, and I had to rewind several times to understand what he was saying. Your family will enjoy this movie!

I loved the book as a kid, and I thought that the movie was a great version of the book. The accents were a little hard to understand so when I found the subtitles to the movie, that was a great help.

For traditional values families, especially religious families, any movie that is subtlety based on Scripture has to be well worth watching. This is actually a (university) student project movie, but it is done in every way as professional as the best of what Hollywood produces. It will hold the interest of both the kids - my grandson was five when he saw it - and their parents, so it truly is a great family movie. Roy is fascinated by the 'ghost' of the cave, and sets out to solve the mystery. Along the way, it seems that the ghost does good deeds for the people in the community. When the mystery is solved, it is made clear that the basis for the good deeds was to follow Jesus' teaching that when you have done it the least of these, you have done it to Me. I can hardly think of a better movie for families.
In response to the one-star reviewers, I'd say that their reviews reveal their bias against anything Christian - even when it is as subtle as its presented in this movie - more than their ability to judge movies. As of this writing, I have about 4,000 DVDs of live-action movies for kids, about kids, or appropriate for kids (e.g. Historical stories, nature, biographies, etc.), I watch as many as 35 movies a week and write reviews of them when I am writing at my mountain cottage. Therefore, I think I can say that I have a pretty broad basis from which to judge movies, especially those pertaining to children and teens. The 'Secret of the Cave' easily come in among the top 5% of movies made for or about kids, especially for families that want to instill good character and long-established traditional values. It may not be 'politically correct' to advocate orthodox morality, but Universal laws cannot be changed by personal opinions. For those who believe that there is a right and wrong, and who believe that doing good deeds for people in need (personally, NOT through the government) is indeed as if it was done for the Lord, this movie is top notch. [Maybe I need to add that I am Catholic and not Adventist, and that I do not know any of this group (although I do know many Hollywood stars and movie crew members). I worked for about five years making TV and theatrical movies.]

Secret of the Cave, and excellent family film,

The Secret of the Cave is an "Uncle Aurthur" Maxwell story about a troubled boy who gets dropped off in Ireland to spend some time with long lost family while Dad and Mom deal with relationship and business issues. Along with all those family issues weighing down on him, there seem to be some strange doings in the sleepy village and no one wants to talk about it, or figure it out.
The adventure of solving this mystery and dealing with the hauntings of the past, make the plot interesting and enjoyable for the whole family. Good clean drama. I must comment on the quality of the film as it is the first feature length film to be produced from my Undergraduate school. I got my BFA (fine art - painting emphasis) at Southern Adventist University in 2001. A few of my classmates from the art school are now teachers there and were instrumental with the creation of the great film. I am very proud to see what great professionalism was used in this project!

On my intuition we rented this at Blockbuster as part of a 99 cent night for kids movies. We have a 10 year old boy and and 7 year old girl. They were entranced on several levels: the boy's feelings as his parents separated and he was dumped by his father on his uncle; the strange and wondrous to them world of this village; and the developing ghost story. As the ghost subplot developed both of them wound up snuggling with me. As the story resolved itself into its spiritual conclusion all of us were very moved. My son said "That was deep" and spent quite some time afterwords looking into the fire.

I enjoyed this movie and have told others about it as well. I didn't realize it was made by a private Christian college until looking it up here at Amazon with the purpose of buying the DVD. I had watched it as a video on demand. If you like family movies with good moral developments as well, you'll enjoy this film.
