Nancy Drew is a young detective. Nancy usually helps her father, Carson Drew, with his cases. Nancy's mystery all starts when she heard rumors that long ago there was a treasure hidden in a city that is now buried under the Nevada Desert. Nancy and her friends, Bess, George, Ned, Burt, and Dave, plan to join a dig sponsored by two colleges to hunt for the gold. Before Nancy starts, she receives an ancient tablet with petroglyphs carved on it. But with the clue from the tablet, a thief also wants the treasure and brings threat and danger to Nancy and her friends.

One stressful adventure after another overwhelmed Nancy and her friends in 102-degree temperature as they follow Nancy's guesses above and below ground. They are assisted by a Indian woman and a young geology student. In the end Nancy and Ned almost lose their lives, just after Nancy has discovered the precious hidden treasure of gold under the Nevada Desert.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Does Everything, July 12, 2006
This review is from: The Secret of the Forgotten City (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 52) (Hardcover)
Some people may be turned off by the fact that Nancy Drew is the perfect human being, who can literally do anything needed to solve her mysteries, but I've been enjoying her series since I was six. I'm now 24 and I still enjoy sitting down on a rainy day with a Nancy Drew mystery.

The Secret of the Forgotten City has a similar plot line to some of the other books in the series, but it's still a good read. I still enjoy seeing Nancy, Bess, George and their boys solve a case. This is no different.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Secret of the Forgotten City (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 52) (Hardcover)
I had an assignment in my English class to read this book. Well, at first I was just like, oh great another boring book to read, but that changed. As I began to read I instantly became attached. When it was time to stop reading for the day I just wanted to keep on reading. Carolyn Keene wrote this book well. This page turning book grasps your interest within just a few chapters. I would highly recommend this book! Read it well!:)

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite boring, yet quite interesting at the same time, June 24, 2011
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Secret of the Forgotten City (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 52) (Hardcover)
After I read this book, I found it quite okay. However, there is very little about there being at the dig to search for the forgotten city.If you are into archaeology, you might be interested in ths book. Out of 10, I rate it 7.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Nancy Drew, January 21, 2011

This review is from: The Secret of the Forgotten City (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 52) (Hardcover)
This volume finds Nancy and her friends participating in an archeological dig in Nevada, searching for priceless remains. Along the way, Nancy speaks rare Mexican Spanish dialects, shows that she can read ancient Native American symbolic languages, and repair rare artifacts in the field. Clearly one of the issues I had with this book was that it created an absurd situation in which to place a teenage detective. The Nancy Drew books really vary in the believability of the whole "teenage detective" thing, but this one was really over the top. There are plenty of childrens' books that far more accurately depict archeological practices, even as they were done in the early-20th century. Some elements were downright disturbing: at one point Nancy and her friends uncover a skeleton, wire it together, and use it to scare their friends at a campfire. If my child was reading this book I'd definitely want to have a discussion with them about appropriate treatment of artifacts and gravesites.

Aside from these issues, this is a mystery with a reasonable amount of suspense, though I did find the ending disappointing. It was not nearly as dangerous as what one normally finds in Nancy Drew.

I universally loved the Nancy Drew books as a child. As an adult I'm finding they really vary. Some are still fabulous, others remind me that you can't go home again. This is one of the latter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carolyn Keene, January 9, 2011
By
Scott Rueter (West Chester, OH United States) - See all my reviews
Although don't usually like authors with pen names, the group of authors (pen name Carolyn Keene) that write the Nancy Drew are extrordinary people who have written over 1000 books! I am always looking for a good Nancy Drew book that I haven't read yet which is very hard because I've read most of the Nancy Drew books already! These books are so interesting that 2 year olds-100 year olds can enjoy Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew books. The thrill, adventure, plot and escape prove that Nancy Drew and her friends are daring young people who know what that mysteries aren't just any old game. I would reccomend that you buy the Nancy Drew books today!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good., July 11, 2006
This review is from: The Secret of the Forgotten City (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 52) (Hardcover)
This book was pretty awsome. It had some parts that seemed to drag on, but what book doesn't. It had some real suspence parts that you just couldn't put down. I like when Nancy and Ned were in the underground river thing, it was intense.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a top-rate ND story, April 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Secret of the Forgotten City (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 52) (Hardcover)
I liked this book, but the story was kind of dull. Nancy and her friends are trying to solve a mystery built on a legend and they find an abandoned city. This story is not as good as most of the early hardback Nancy Drew books.
