What did Mary and Collin eat?,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Secret Garden Cookbook: Recipes Inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's THE SECRET GARDEN (Hardcover)
Did you ever wonder how the food Mary and Collin ate tasted? This book answers that question with over 40 recipes and lots of fun facts straight from the Victorian age. Try Mulligatawny soup from India, Tattie Broth like Dickon would have eaten, and enjoy an authentic English tea. These recipes are not only fun to make, but they taste good too! You will love this book!

Charming Cookbook; Mediocre Recipes,
By Scarlet O'Hara "Southern Belle" (Richmond, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Secret Garden Cookbook: Recipes Inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's THE SECRET GARDEN (Hardcover)
I found this book at the library the other day and I couldn't wait to try cooking some of the recipes. They brought back to mind the recipes that my English grandmother used to make when I was a child. I spent my blissful summers in England laying about on the lawn, smelling the roses and eating all kinds of baked goodies. First I attempted the currant buns and then the parkin; which was one of my grandmother's specialties. Unfortunately, both recipes turned out very bland and lacked flavor. The parkin especially was dry and unflavorful. Parkin is supposed to be moist and gooey and gingery. This was none of those. I was really disappointed as I so wanted to like this book and was hoping everything would be wonderful. Not to be though, I'm afraid. I am still going to make the cornish pasties and probably try a few of the other recipes but I would not recommend buying this book if you are serious about cooking as I am. You can definitely find better recipes elsewhere.

Gave this as a gift to my elementary school teacher (she taught me 20+ years ago) and it was a big hit! This book includes excerpts from the original book and easy, everyday recipes.
