Editorial Reviews

Reba the redheaded rein dear delivers a mixed bag of cheer on her new holiday record. Secret of Giving gets off to a great start with "This Is My Prayer for You," an upbeat, fairly unvarnished country tune with a lively little fiddle break. But unless you're a full-on Reba fan, it's pretty much downhill sledding from there as McEntire falls back on the Nashville formula for many of the originals penned for the album. While her voice is always in good form--and she suggests Brenda Lee and Loretta Lynn in "I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus"--there are too many predictable chord progressions and decorative shadings in songs such as "Santa Claus Is Coming Back to Town," a heartbreak Christmas song. What she needs is more tunes like the closing cut and the title track, a sparsely arranged acoustic number that avoids maudlin sentiments and faux cheer. No amount of children singing ("The Angels Sang") or pretty playing can get her out of the deep ruts that Nashville has got most of its stars stuck in these days. --Martin Keller

NOT MANY artists have career longevity (or guts) enough to put out two Christmas albums in one career; enter country's long-reigning queen, Reba McEntire (we're talking someone awards shows had to tell their members NOT to vote for because she was so dominant). This Christmas album is my favorite that I've ever heard. Reba, who arranged two tracks, flawlessly blends traditional carols (which she arranges) with powerful, contemporary Christmas songs. I listen to this album in August for goodness' sakes! The highlight of the album to me is "One Child, One Day," a song many love and some are unable to grasp the inner meaning; sometimes with more contemporary music we forget what all this Christmas business is about, the real SPIRITual meanings. Another powerful performance is Reba's fleckless "deliverance" of the half classic half carol "Mary, Did You Know?" Talk about a (Warning, cliche time!) tear jerker! She also turns in great performances on "The Secret Of Giving" and the delightful "This Is My Prayer For You." Highly recommended, not only will you get in the spirit of Christmas, but you'll understand more of the real SPIRIT of things! A great 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reba is awesome in this album! November 19, 1999

This is a stellar Reba album. She deserves all the credit for the album. She is just great. All the songs will put you in a instant Christmas mood. Reba sings with emotion and feeling with a little bit of humor in this recording. Reba, you are the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality Christmas pop-country offering October 26, 2003
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was Reba's second Christmas album. It is very different from her first, Merry Christmas to you, which was firmly rooted in traditional country.

Reba sings a great mix of old and new songs on this album. The old classics are represented by I saw Mama kissing Santa Claus and Up on the housetop. Two contemporary songs that could yet become classics are Mary did you know and Till the season comes round again. Kenny Rogers had previously recorded both of them for his album, The gift, although Kathy Mattea (on her Good news album) was the singer who first popularized Mary did you know (written and first recorded by an obscure Christian music singer).

I have not heard any of the other six songs anywhere else but they are certainly worth hearing. My favorites are the opening This is my prayer for you and the title track, although One child one day is not far behind and the others are also wonderful.

If you enjoy nineties pop-country music and you are looking for something festive, this will suit you ideally.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Describe This CD In One Word....SENSATIONAL November 7, 1999
Format:Audio CD
It is so amazing how someone can knock a person right out of their seats with a Christmas album. Reba's voice is just so sensational that it brings out the spirit of Christmas. It is a must for everyone even those who aren't Reba fans. This is the best Christmas album that I have ever heard. Excellent job, REBA!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed December 6, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Nothing special about the song performances. Doesn't elicit the Christmas feeling for me - feels more like Reba pop. No heart or soul in Reba's interpretations here. Too bad. I was especially interested in hearing Reba sing "Mary, Did You Know?", but I was disappointed. Lackluster. Love the cover though - Reba looks great, as always.

Wow! I just noticed something! It's obvious that on September 29, 2005, Reba fans performed a good magic trick and changed the skew of the rating for this cd by stacking the deck with 5-star reviews. Shame! Plus the earliest reviews, particular those from the vague and numerous "A Customer" and those from the one-shot reviewers - who's ONLY review here on (since 1999, no less) were for THIS cd - seem dubious as well. That explains the oddity of why reviewers here either really loved or really didn't like this cd, with scarce middle ground! Caveat emptor!

This CD is tradional Reba. I mean she sings like she did when she first came on the scene. I absolutely love it. The songs are very spiritual and emotional.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kind of 'pop', but who wants to hear the same 'ol same old?
I like a fair bit of country music. Too bad most country artists who do Christmas collections seem content to just sing old standards without offering anything really new. Read more
