Book Description

October 1, 1988
Raisin Stackhouse doesn't mind doing odd jobs for old Miss Effie Pfluggins, but when Miss Effie talks her into cleaning up the old church cemetery, she has no idea what trouble she might dig up. Mama says Miss Effie talks much too much, but Raisin loves hearing her remember the old days--especially when one of her stories puts Raisin smack in the middle of real-life mystery.

When Raisin is grounded for sneaking a night out, she not only misses her chance to compete in the Miss Ebony Pageant, but her efforts to uncover the famous person buried in the cemetery are brought to a half, too. Somehow Raisin's got to solve the big mystery no one in town wants to talk about. Will her discovery bring her glory, or is the past better off left buried?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 Eleven-year-old Raisin Stackhouse is the oldest of three sisters in a black family that lives in Gumbo Grove, S.C. She is intensely interested in finding out about history and heroes, but, when she questions why her class never studies about blacks ``who did stuff around here,'' her history teacher's response is that no blacks there had ever done anything worth talking about. Elderly Effie Pfluggins knows better than that, and she has proof. Raisin soon becomes precariously involved in the past by helping Miss Effie clean up the church's cemetery, where history virtually explodes into their lives. Before long, the entire community is enlightened by revelations from Raisin and Miss Effie. Subplots of peer and family relationships, including sibling rivalry, are masterfully blended to create a warm, humorous, and wonderful story centered around an intellectually curious and spirited black girl. An array of characters draws readers into and out of serious moments and humorous exchanges. The black speech may inconvenience readers unfamiliar with it, but truth requires it to be as it is presentedpoetic in its relevance. An echo of similarity with Virginia Hamilton's The House of Dies Drear (Macmillan, 1968) prevails through the portrayals of black family life and the searches for important historical connections. The outstanding differences are the warmth and humor of Gumbo Grove , which demonstrate the welcomed emergence of another talented and appealing black writer of books for children. Helen E. Williams, University of Maryland, College Park

5.0 out of 5 stars The Secret of Gumbo Grove **Alison**, May 27, 2001
A Kid's Review
The Secret of Gumbo Grove is an excellent book. I highly recommend it, especially if you like mysteries. It is about a 11-year old girl who helps Miss Effie, the church secretary, clean out an old graveyard. Miss Effie knows all about the people buried in the cemetery, and is happy to tell their stories to Raisin. After Miss Effie gives her the old church records, she finds herself in a mystery, who is "Gumbo" Dickson? Why does no one in the town want to talk about him? Could the African-American man be the founder of Gumbo Grove? I really liked how the author, Eleanora E. Tate tied the mystery in with Raisin's regular life. For example, the "Miss Ebony Calvary County Pageant",in which one of Raisin's sisters, Hattie, participates. I greatly disliked Miss Aussie, who wouldn't even admit that some people in the graveyard were her relatives! Miss Aussie wanted the cemetery to be destroyed. I found it very sad that marijuana and alcohol were sold to minors in her community, but luckily, Raisin didn't take any. This book is one of my favorites, and I hope you like it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Book, February 22, 2001
A Kid's Review
The Secret of Gumbo Grove By: Eleanora E. Tate

I enjoyed "The Secret of Gumbo Grove". It shows a tourist town from an interesting point of view that made the book fresh and exciting. This book is so novel that there are no other books that compare in its genre. The writing is of a very high quality. I would recommend this book to almost anyone of any age. I would rate this book an 8 out of 10 for interesting plot and characters, but it's slightly boring. The ending in sepcific is boring. I like the location and the detailed histories of the characters must have taken forever, due to the detail in them. The plot could use a little work in the way of the antagonist, who is a bit predictable. But the other characters are pretty well created. The ending was kind of disappointing and not very exciting. But all together the book was enjoyable and easy to read. They are trying to save a cemetery from the people at their local church. I'll let you figure out the rest.....

4.0 out of 5 stars The Secret of Gumbo Grove, September 13, 2004
A Kid's Review
I thought the book was better than average. The ending was a little disappointing, but I thought the theme of the book was
great. I thought Eleanora Tate did an awesome job at describing the characters, especially the peoples' ancestors. I didn't really like the whole paegent thing, because I'm a boy. (you know what I mean) The only reason I read it was because my teacher made me, but I'm glad I did.
