5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive scholarship that helps "fill in the blanks" of history, January 7, 2009

This review is from: The Secret History of Dreaming (Hardcover)
Trailblazer Robert Moss has written a masterful combination of scholarship, story, historical fact, and guidance for living in our turbulent current times. It's an important addition to his previously published books, all of which I've found to be excellent. The "understory" of how dreams have shaped history not only makes for fascinating and enlightening reading, it also fosters imagination about how we can create a positive future by tending to our dreams in a consciously active way. I'm especially inspired by the chapter about Joan of Arc and the Tree-Seers, with its story about how this remarkable peasant woman drew her strength from nature and dreams. And the epilogue left me feeling encouraged and empowered by the power of dreaming--humanity's common denominator.

5.0 out of 5 stars Restoring the Missing Dimension of Dreaming, December 3, 2008
By
This review is from: The Secret History of Dreaming (Hardcover)
THE SECRET HISTORY OF DREAMING is an absolutely "must have" brilliant book that touches that place in our soul that most wants to understand all that is and all that has brought us to where we stand today and where we are going tomorrow.

Robert Moss - standing firmly on the foundation of original scholarly research - peels back the shallow skin of history, made dry and brittle in the omission of dreaming, and reveals the secret places in the mind where the creative imagination comes alive. Robert synthesizes a vast repertoire of historic records from the oldest dream of Dumuzi through a fluid time-line of spies, statesmen, writers, scientists, warriors, and creative artists, restoring the roots, rhythm and role of dreaming as the missing dimension that drives our understanding of science and literature, war and religion, medicine, romance and intrigue, the most beautiful and the most terrible events that chronicle our survival and the survival of our world - and with superb clarity delivers the past we need: the lessons and knowledge that will serve and sustain humanity and further its evolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars People we all know who changed the world, February 16, 2009

The Secret History of Dreaming gave me so much concrete information on people we know who used their dreams to change history. I had no idea how much Harriet Tubman used her dreams for the underground railroad. Mark Twain and Winston Churchill and many others really paid attention to their dreams and the happenstances of their lives. It was so interesting. I also learned a lot about going to my own dream library and seeing what is there and what I can use in my own life. Thank you , Robert Moss, for another great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams from history that tell us about today, March 27, 2009
By
This review is from: The Secret History of Dreaming (Hardcover)
Robert's book brings to life the rich history of how dreams have shaped our cultures and our world throughout history. It brilliantly details many cultures and individuals who honored their dreams and honored the gifts they were given. By detailing this rich history we can fully understand that we, today are just like these individuals in history. Dreaming is a gift of spirit and a way for us to connect to our deeper self and our souls desires. By understanding the deep, rich history of dreaming we can better understand how desperately we need to bring a dreaming society back into the now. Robert is a creative story teller and detailed historian. He knows how to bring history to life. It's hard to put the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich Source of Information and Inspiration, May 10, 2009
This review is from: The Secret History of Dreaming (Hardcover)
This elegant book by Robert Moss is so well-researched and so well-written that I quickly became absorbed in it. Who knew these fascinating people of history, religion, science and the arts led such fascinating inner lives as well? Any reader will be delighted to learn about humanity's array of dreamers from the ancients to modern visionaries. The United States had two ex-Presidents, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, whose rekindled friendship and simultaneous deaths were foretold in a precognitive dream 17 years earlier by Dr. Rush in 1809. Their dream journals are an inner view of the thoughts of our Forefathers. The familiar story of Harriett Tubman bravely leading slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad is further enhanced when we learn that each journey appeared to her first vividly in images and dreams. Two scientists, Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli, were "magnets of coincidence", as they explored theories of mind, matter and synchronicity. Pauli offered 1300 dream reports in eighteen months; Jung had an intense near-death experience. From literary giants and rock stars to Winston Churchill--each individual story is evoked with warmth and passion. Robert Moss is a trustworthy source and inspiration to all of us who value our dreams!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great find - unexpected value of historical perspective, September 18, 2010

This book was a surprise -- something that unexpectedly broadened my understanding of how much dreaming can add to our lives if we open up to its potential to reconnect us to dimensions outside of our normal "box". Many years ago I studied my dreams in a traditional way, using dream symbol books and standard psychological analysis, which didn't seem to work for me. Reading this book gave me a much more open way of interacting with the dream world -- now it's not so structured, and I feel a real communication link has been established. The historical approach of this book gave me a willingness to trust in the dream process. I really found this valuable.
