Much more than a good translation--lots of helpful context, January 2, 2011
This review is from: The Secret History, with Related Texts (Paperback)
The bare text of the Secret History is pretty amazing -- and Kaldellis's translation is clear and readable (and the experts say more faithful than others) -- but the really great thing about this edition is the extra material he's included. He's written some 70 pages of very helpful introduction not only putting Prokopios's text in historical context, but also clarifying some of his rhetorical techniques. Given the importance of the literary (not just the historical) context, he's also included related excerpts from other relevant works, which help you read the text intelligently.
Fortunately, the publishers have set the price low enough that there's no excuse for buying one of the older editions which don't have all this great additional material.
