2.0 out of 5 stars This has NOTHING to do w/ Secret Invasion, May 7, 2010

This review is from: Secret Invasion: New Warriors (v. 3) (Paperback)
You really have to be knee deep in the New Warriors series to understand any of this. I was hoping this would focus more on the Avengers Initiative splinter group of the New Warriors w/ Justice, Slapstick, Rage et al, but they are barely mentioned...which is odd b/c I would think they would have first crack at the invading Skrulls. Instead, it becomes a time warp into a possible future where Tony Stark is really...I won't spoil it, but it's just weird. I was pretty let down...although I am not too familiar w/ New Warriors. If you are, maybe you would like it. But if you are hoping this was an important part of the Secret Invasion puzzle, think again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Has little to do with Secret Invasion..., April 5, 2011

This review is from: Secret Invasion: New Warriors (v. 3) (Paperback)
Secret Invasion: New Warriors collects New Warriors issues #14-20, all originally published in 2008. Though the book lacks a volume number, it is the third and final graphic novel in the series that began with New Warriors Vol. 1 (Marvel Comics, Civil War) (v. 1) Defiant and New Warriors - Volume 2: Thrashed (v. 2). Like Marvel's other Secret Invasion paperbacks, this one is nicely put together with medium-gloss paper and a solid binding. Save for a single page of "Previously..." text, it contains no bonus material.

Despite the volume's title, Kevin Grevioux's story has almost nothing to do with Marvel's Secret Invasion crossover. Civil War fans, however, may appreciate the first two issues as they involve the recovery and burial of the deceased New Warriors' bodies. The majority of this book, however, revolves around a competent but highly predictable time travel story, in which the New Warriors must escape from a future dystopia ruled by Iron Man. There's nothing particularly bad about the writing--though X-Fans will almost certainly object to Grevioux's take on former mutants like Beak and Jubilee. But it's not particularly good either. As for the art, Koi Turnbull's pencils for the first few issues are fun, if occasionally a little crowded. Reilly Brown and Casey Jones's pencils for the remaining issues, on the other hand, are fairly unremarkable.

Unless you're an obsessive Secret Invasion or New Warriors fan, you're better off skipping this collection. Those looking for good post-Civil-War stories involving the original New Warriors will find better stuff in Avengers: The Initiative, Vol. 1: Basic Training (v. 1), Avengers: The Initiative, Vol. 2: Killed in Action (v. 2), and the rest of the Initiative series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best there is but still a fun read, January 26, 2010
This review is from: Secret Invasion: New Warriors (v. 3) (Paperback)
This is the last trade of the 4th volume of New Warriors. This collects the two issue Secret Invasion tie-in and the very last story arc in which the Warriors travel through time so Donyell can try to get his brother (the original Night Thrasher) back and also try to stop Tony Stark from ever being able to support the Registration Act.

I collected this ebtire series. I really dig it, a bunch of depowered mutants finally finding a place since the events of Decimation and trying to live without powers but still being heroes in the process; also Donyell Taylor trying to live up, and get back, his brother Dwayne.

So the Warriors are hanging out and BAM some Skrulls start invading Earth. Thrash takes this opportunity to go find out if his brother if actually still alive and the body that was destroyed in Stamford is indeed his real brother. But when he goes to his bro's grave the members of the original New Warriors are there to confront him and see if he is the Skrull. A throwdown ensues between the new guard and the old boys. Then in the final arc the Warriors travel forward through time to an America where Iron Man is totally in charge. So Thrash's new mission is to kill Tony Stark, but things are not quite what it seems.

Trust me, this is a cool read. I like the art. The stories aren;t the best you can find but comics are for entertainment, and this is entertaining. So read and enjoy.
