5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, perfect, surprisingly effective
I don't think I could take paying for and/or reading every comic related to the Secret Invasion storyline but happily this tpb (pretty thin for a TPB!) is just right. I paid almost half of the suggested retail price and I would say that's the most this tpb is worth. Do not pay full cover price for it but compared to the recent level of quality of comics, this one is...

I don't understand how the guys before me rated this one so high. It's 2.5, 3 stars at best. To me, it seems like Marvel made a special effort to insert the X-Men in the Secret Invasion storyline. I don't understand how the guys before me rated this one so high. It's 2.5, 3 stars at best. To me, it seems like Marvel made a special effort to insert the X-Men in the Secret Invasion storyline. The story is way too simple and un-sophisticated. Actually nothing really happes, the Scrull come to conquer San Francisco, fight the X-Men, and in a few hours the solution comes out, and the Skrulls loose. That's it?... The characters acted exactly "by the book". Cyclops was the boring leader, Beast made research, and Emma Frost was sexy.No character development, no action, and to me, the art was one of the weakest parts of this book. The colors, almost no black ink, it just doesn't fit a story that is supposed to be dramatic. The only interesting thing was what happens with Nightcrawer but even this wasn't developed enough... I was dissapointed, but for that price it wasn't such a let-down. So get this only if you are a really die hard fan, and you don't want to miss a book. Otherwise, SKIP it.

I paid almost half of the suggested retail price and I would say that's the most this tpb is worth. Do not pay full cover price for it but compared to the recent level of quality of comics, this one is superior and worth buying. I love the depiction of Skrull shamelessness and whining when countered/thwarted. They are very Doctor Who villains but way whinier like actual nerd humans. At least with Skynet and Terminators, we don't have to listen to them mangle morality or religious direction. The art is pretty good, the panels are logically laid out (no Image popularized scatter and sprawl), and the dialogue is clear. I appreciated the bonus of an early Skrull appearance issue back in the day where the Skrull imitated but misdelivered the style of a certain team. Awesome.

Secret Invasion X-men was an unexpectedly good read. Instead of the paranoia angle that the enemy is among us that the other secret invasion tie-in books it takes a different approach.

This is the X-men at war with an invading alien force. All the X-men, there are so many characters that get their moment to shine that its pretty impressive.

Mike Carey does some great character moments with Cyclops, Beast, and Nightcrawler. Cary Nord's art is clear and expressive and really moves the story along well. I also have to make note of McCaig's color choices really add to mood of the book. This collects X-men secret invasion 1-4 and a nice classic issue of fantastic four with the x-men.

If you want to see the x-men using military strategy and cunning, I recommend this trade.
