From School Library Journal

Gr 7-12-- Spending the summer as a babysitter for ten-year-old Matt at Beaches, an exclusive resort community on Lake Michigan, Annie is confused by Matt's grandparents' refusal to let Matt see his father. They are also reluctant to talk about Matt's mother's recent death. When Bryce, Matt's father, suddenly materializes in an out-of-the-way area, he proves to be charming and handsome, and Annie wonders why the Larimers shun him. Events snowball when Bryce kidnaps Matt. The secret of Matt's mother's death is then revealed--a resortwide conspiracy to cover up Bryce's murder of his wife, under the guise of protecting Matt and the privacy of the families in the resort. The community recovers Matt without police help, and Annie realizes that she must leave before she learns too much and becomes a part of the Beaches, whose elegant facade covers a fierce, terrifying side that protects its own at any cost. An uneven plot line slows the story at times, but enough hints are dropped to keep readers wondering about the secret of Beaches. Characterization is not well rounded or complete, so Bryce's schizophrenic behavior is not as frightening as it could be. Extraneous details, scenes, and characters don't allow the book to gel completely, but the element of lurking evil is there, making this a book that will hold readers' interest and provoke discussions on vigilante justice and just who is above the law. --Kathryn Havris, Mesa Public Library, AZ
