5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book, July 16, 2008
This review is from: The Secret Life of Bees (Paperback)
This book pulled my heart out from the first page. I loved it from beginning to end. The language and images are so fresh and real and beautiful that I was transported back to 1964, to the smells and sounds of the rural south. This is a must-read. My heartfelt thanks to Sue Monk Kidd for writing it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The secret Life of Bees, September 15, 2009
The Secret Life of Bees is a worth-while read. It was definitely an interesting book and I would recommend this book to other people. The book is about a young girl who lives with her father. The setting is in South Carolina, and the time in which this book takes place is right after the Civil Rights act was passed, giving African-Americans the same rights that whites had. Lily Owens is very miserable living with her father, T-Ray. Her father tortured Lily and she has low self esteem. So her father was very abusive to her and her mother, Deborah, died when she was four or five. Poor Lily had been close to her mother and spends a lot of time thinking about her for she did not know much about her mother. Her nanny, a black woman named Rosaleen, is in jail after offending a white man. Life just hands a lot of struggles to Lily, but she finds she is capable of overcoming them. So as a result, Lily decides to break Rosaleen out of jail and they both run to a small town in South Carolina where Lily believes her mother spent some of her life. When Lily and Rosaleen escaped to South Carolina, they meet a black, kind-hearted woman named August. There Lily starts to try and find out all she can about her mother while living with August and her two sisters. August and her two sisters, June and May, are beekeepers who live the pink house. August treats Lily with respect and tells her that nothing is perfect, there is just life. There Lily learns that there really is no difference between white people and black people and you should treat all people with respect no matter what their skin color is or what they believe in.
