This review is from: Secret Life of Hannah Whitall Smith (Hardcover)
The title of this biography is an intriguing first glimpse into the life of a famous Christian woman. Known for her still current bestseller "The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life" (first published in 1870), Hannah Whitall Smith led a most unusual life. Marie Henry theorizes that no biography has been written about her before because of the mistaken belief in many Christian circles that if one lives an obedient life, God will not allow suffering. Smith's life belies such a triumphalist theology. In the midst of fame, disgrace, turmoil and rejection, a rich faith-filled devotional literature poured forth.
Living in the second half of the nineteenth century, Smith's early feminism pushed her to speak out for women's suffrage, education and temperance. Her growing understanding of Scripture's call on her life led her and her husband into a public sphere of traveling and preaching in America and Europe. While remaining committed to Christ, Smith saw her husband's emotional breakdown and moral deterioration, her children's rejection of her faith, and the custody battles over her grandchildren. In the midst of it all, she affirmed her trust in a loving God.
Hannah Whitall Smith comes to life in this book--shooting rapids in middle-age, playing in haystacks as a grandmother, suffering the unfaithfulness of her husband, agonizing over her children's loss of faith. A committed disciple, leader, feminist and mother, she portrays a whole woman for us today.
