About the Author

Martha Nix Wade has had tremendous success as a former child actress (co-starring on The Waltons, Days of Our Lives, and many other television shows). While Martha s life appeared to be picture perfect to adoring fans and family members, years of sexual abuse behind closed doors were wreaking havoc on her perception of love, life, relationships, and self. She has dedicated her life to sharing her story to bring about change in the lives of others throughout the world. Martha received her Bachelors from UCLA and Masters from Biola University.

Martha Nix Wade deals sensitivly with a difficult subject, childhood sexual abuse. I especially appreciated her description of "forgiveness"....it made sense. She doesn't forgive in the traditional way, rather she "releases" her abuser to be punished by God. She trusts that God's judgement will be far worse than anything she can imagine. That's not to say that she let's the abuser get away with his crimes...she is adamant about pursuing justice and keeping this pedophile away from other children.

I used to watch Days of our Lives as well as The Waltons so was familiar with the author. She has an important story to tell, but i did not find this book very impressive. It was very short and not terribly well-written.I wish she could re-write it with better guidance. However, Martha's involvement with the cause of anti-child molestation is laudable. Good luck to her.

You never know what is happening in peoples lives, Watched this girl on The Waltons. Would have never guessed she had so much pain in her life at that time. I am glad she is a very strong woman now and has got past all the heartache.

My Secret Life is one of the best books I have read on the painful subject of sexual abuse. I have read many because of my own story. Martha Nix Wade has articulated her story with feelings and accuracy. Although I didn't know the abuse was happening prior to our church's bringing the secret out into the open, I did know many of the people involved and remember well the shock of the revelation that a "respected" church leader can be an abuser. Her comments on handling the symptoms and effects of abuse, even when the memories are fuzzy, was very helpful to me personally. As Martha says "sexual abuse does not have to be detailed to be traumatic."
