Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Once in a very great long while Fang, swashbuckling hero of many of his own dreams, answers to the name of Snookums, but only if there's some kibble or catnip in it for him. Whenever Fang (A.K.A. Walter Kitty) gets tired of helping his People with household chores (sweeping curio shelves with his reckless tail, doing the dishes with his tongue), he feels a nap coming on. And just like that, Walter Kitty is transformed into a superhero, an intrepid explorer, a fierce hunter.

Readers of all ages, especially those who share a household with a cat, will giggle at Barbara Jean Hicks's cat’s-eye-view of humans. Walter may overestimate his talents as a housekeeper (a la Amelia Bedelia) and conqueror of "scurvy scoundrels," but his People don't mind…and neither will his reading audience. He doesn't quite have the charm of Hobbes, but Dan Santat's retro illustrations and Hicks's deadpan monologue combine for a fun, funny tale. --Emilie Coulter

More About the Author

"As you go the way of life, you will see a great chasm. Jump. It is not as wide as you think." --Native American Proverb

Children's book author, speaker and teacher BARBARA JEAN HICKS claims that everything she knows about writing, she learned from her favorite cat. Miguel had a nose for adventure, she says, leaping into the unknown like an old-world explorer, learning along the way. And he had the scars to prove it.

A writer, too, is a curious creature, Barbara says, always sniffing about for new ideas. Observing, reading, eavesdropping. Haunting favorite places and exploring new ones. Paying attention.

"For me," says Barbara, "starting a story is an adventure, a leap into the unknown. I might begin with a curious bit of dialogue, a vivid description, a word or phrase that tickles my funny bone. Before I have any real idea where I'm going, I'm on my way. I let the writing take me where it wants to. It's only after I've plunged into a project that I begin to find out what it's really about. The act of writing teaches me what my story is, how it wants to be told, why it matters. Slowly. Rewrite after rewrite. Not very efficient, I'm afraid. Messy. Unpredictable. Fun!" Her writing mantra, Barbara claims, is simple: Look, leap and learn!

Almost as much as she loves to write, Barbara loves presenting assemblies and writing workshops in schools as a visiting author. She has taught at every level from preschool to community college and worked in an elementary school as author-in-residence, program facilitator and parent educator. In conjunction with her school visits, Barbara also offers a publishing program for student work.

Barbara Jean, a.k.a. the Story Queen, lives in Oxnard, California but considers Northwest Washington her home. Visit her online at www.barbarajeanhicks.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Attention, cat lovers!, May 21, 2007
This review is from: The Secret Life of Walter Kitty (Hardcover)
If you are a cat's "person", you really need to meet Walter Kitty. You probably will identify with his "person", and perhaps recognize some of your own cat's dreams. I predict that when you read this aloud to a child, he or she will be enchanted. What? No child to appreciate it? Do not be deterred; read it to/for yourself. Your day will be lighter and brighter.

Walter is a wonderful cat, with a typical cat personality. While his humans are around he tries hard to be helpful, but when they are not looking he wanders into a series of adventures.

An all around fantastic read. I'm not sure if my six year old likes it more than I do, but it is close.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous read, November 6, 2007
This review is from: The Secret Life of Walter Kitty (Hardcover)
This book is entirely too cute. If you are a cat person, you will definitely relate and be delighted by the charming story and wonderful illustrations. I would not recommend this as a read for very young children, but kids 8+ are likely to be quite entertained. Adults, though, will really be pleasantly surprised by the wit, whimsy, and charm of this book.
