Attention, cat lovers!,
By
This review is from: The Secret Life of Walter Kitty (Hardcover)
If you are a cat's "person", you really need to meet Walter Kitty. You probably will identify with his "person", and perhaps recognize some of your own cat's dreams. I predict that when you read this aloud to a child, he or she will be enchanted. What? No child to appreciate it? Do not be deterred; read it to/for yourself. Your day will be lighter and brighter.

Walter is a wonderful cat, with a typical cat personality. While his humans are around he tries hard to be helpful, but when they are not looking he wanders into a series of adventures.
An all around fantastic read. I'm not sure if my six year old likes it more than I do, but it is close.

Fabulous read,

This book is entirely too cute. If you are a cat person, you will definitely relate and be delighted by the charming story and wonderful illustrations. I would not recommend this as a read for very young children, but kids 8+ are likely to be quite entertained. Adults, though, will really be pleasantly surprised by the wit, whimsy, and charm of this book.

The Secret Life of Walter Kitty by Barbara Jean Hicks,

This review is from: The Secret Life of Walter Kitty (Hardcover)
Walter Kitty does have a secret life, but he can come around to be a normal loving and loved cat in the end. It is a fun twist of the Walter Mitty story about a cat who thinks his name is Fang and the humans around him should treat him with more respect. There is a lot of humor and the illustrations do the text great justice. They are vibrant and really cool in general. This is a fun book for children aged 4-8 even without knowing about Walter Mitty.

I enjoy reading this book and think it's pretty funny. My very literal son, on the other hand, spends most of the time asking me why the man looks so mad. This is probably a good book for the 4 and older set.

A Sweet Story,
By
This review is from: The Secret Life of Walter Kitty (Hardcover)
What a delightful book! Walter Kitty is a ferocious cat, at least in his dreams, and he insists to himself that he is actually called Fang. His efforts to help his person and her husband are not appreciated, but there are other reasons to stay with them. The pictures are broadly drawn and dynamic. A cute story with clever pictures.

Receives Dan Santat's fun drawings,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Secret Life of Walter Kitty (Hardcover)
Barbara Jean Hicks' THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER KITTY receives Dan Santat's fun drawings and tells of Fang, a superhero tiger of a cat who is always reading to save the day - despite the fact that his quiet old owners don't seem to understand his heroic gestures. For Walter is always in trouble... and his imagination doesn't save him.

I love the idea of this book, it's very funny. As a any one who's ever had a cat knows, cats always look like they have something else really important going on. The illustrations are great. As a the reader I do not think this book flows very well between Walter's secret life and his kitty life, BUT my 3-year old son really enjoys the story and it's a children's book, so that's what counts.

Pretty good but not the best,
By Aunt Melissa (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews

I bought this book for my nephews, almost 2 and 4. The 4-year old said he really liked it, but I think it was a little too much for the 2-year old. Understanding the story requires combining listening to the story (or reading, if your child can read himself) and looking at the pictures, which I think was a bit too hard for the almost 2-year old. The pictures are really nice, but I was kind of hoping for a little more substance in the story. So, overall, this is a good children's book, but it's not the best one I've read.
