Songs that Lorrie learned from her father,
By
This review is from: Secret Love (Audio CD)
Lorrie's father, country singer George Morgan, had musical tastes far beyond country music and he was clearly a strong influence when it came to musical taste. This album shows that Lorrie is well capable of singing songs from her father's era. Of course, the idea of a country singer recording songs from the Great American Songbook is nothing new - Willie Nelson has recorded several albums of such songs, while Crystal Gayle has recorded a tribute album to Hoagy Carmichael. On this album, Lorrie has chosen to cover two very famous songs, Secret love and Fly me to the moon, together with other classics of the era including My foolish heart, They can't take that away from me and many other wonderful songs that are less well known these days than they once were but still deserve to be heard. I became a huge fan of Lorrie Morgan following the release of her first RCA album. She has never quite achieved the level of success expected of her, partly because of her eclectic musical tastes. Commercially, this album may have damaged her career because it alienated some fans who only wanted her to sing the pop-country music they expected from her. Artistically, I think it is a masterpiece - one of her best albums - but you must make up your own mind.

This CD got lukewarm reception from critics and fans alike, but its great for many reasons. SECRET LOVE is a collection of standards, it is by no means a country album. Now you may wonder if Lorrie can pull of standards, and the answer is a resounding yes. She handles the classics very well without overpowering them or diminishing their value, her voice is both strong enough and restrained when it needs to be in the songs. The CD gives me a nostalgic feeling, thinking about broadway musicals. Lorrie transcendes through each song with ease and flow, giving us a seamless set of songs for the times. It includes some classics such as An Affair To Remember, Here's That Rainy Day, Once Upon A Time, Secret Love, Summer of '42, Fly Me To The Moon, They Cant Take That Away From Me and many more. Overall its a great album, if you enjoy the genre of music then its definately for you. Lorrie fans beware this is not her typical country album, so caution to you if you dont enjoy her other expenditures. Overall a treat!

vocal talent that withstands the norm!,

I've been a fan of lorrie's since i heard the song "something in red"! I know now as i knew then that this lady has a tremendous, touching voice! Being an african american male i confess to knowing very little about country music; but ms. morgan has the type of voice that would do any type of song justice! Hearing her haunting duet with frank sinatra i knew that i was right on the money! If you are a fan of old standards this is one for the shelf! I long for the day when people realize that singing is an art; and to me what makes "a singer" an "artist" is when the singer takes the risks to step out of the norm and try something new and different; as lorrie did with this effort. That alone speaks volumes!

This CD leaves alot to desire from Lori. I have most all of her other albums and I play them over and over. This one I listened to once and that was enough. This is not the Lori I love. Maybe she should have kept it a "Secret"

Lorrie has one of those voices that is so rich and warm that it reaches out and touches you. I guess that's why she was inducted into the Grand Old Opry several years before she ever had a hit. This collection suits Morgan's vocals very well. Though one or two songs, like Harold Arlen's "I've Got The World On A String" and the Gershwins' "They Can't Take That Away From Me," sound awkward, the rest of the CD is beautiful. Morgan's voice almost reminds me of Barbara Mandrell when she sparkles through "Good Morning Heartache." Other than that, "Once Upon A Time," "Here's That Rainy Day," "Secret Love," "I Wish You Love," and the saxophone laden "Fly Me To The Moon." Lorrie's been wanting to do this type of CD for a long time, and I'm glad to own it. It is a true labor of love. (And for those who are concerned, Morgan's voice doesn't twang!)

And Just Why Shouldn't She?,

I have to laugh at some of the earlier customer reviews of this effort. Since when can't a country singer sing other types of songs? And why should she be embarrassed or criticized if she "Sounds" country. I think it's great that Lorrie, whose own previous work has not yet produced one classic song, took on these songs and does such a nice job with them. Her readings of "Here's That Rainy Day" and "Once Upon a Time" are fine. Sure they sound country, but so what? Eclecticism is a rare commodity these days and it's nice to see these categorized singers branch out a little. Haven't you heard Gary Morris sing opera? Or the theme from "An American Tail"? Or his Christmas albums? What a loss if we made country singers stick to making country albums. Thanks to Lorrie for at least trying--and doing if not a great job, a certainly commendable one that beats much of the mediocrity Mss. Twain, McBride, and Hill are coming up with these days.

This is a great album from start to finish from an outstanding artist/vocalist. I have a few of Lorrie Morgan's CD's (including "Country Legends" which provides an excellent overview of her recordings!) and this is just as wonderful as any of them...a very different style of song, perhaps, but wonderfully sung and executed. Kudos to producer Richard Landis, also! I'm most familiar with his work with Juice Newton.
I have to say this album very much reminds me of the trilogy of Linda Ronstadt albums done with Nelson Riddle some years ago. Excellent orchestrations (thanks Tom Bruner, arranger/conductor) with fantastic vocals (thanks Lorrie) :-)

Wow! Classic hits done by a classy lady!,

Because I appreciate some of Lorrie Morgan's works, I was interested to hear that she was doing an album of classic American songs -- songs I used to hear as a child. I put it on my Christmas list, tore off its fancy wrapping, and have played with my new toy more than any of my other gifts. I liked it more than I could have imagined. It reminds me of Linda Ronstadt's efforts with the same genre, but Lorrie actually does more justice to the songs since she doesn't OVER-stylize the works. She sings them the way their composers must have meant them to be sung. The lyrics are emphasized perfectly, the notes are held exactly right and she works smoothly with the orchestra behind her. Her voice seems to have the necessary "smoky" quality for songs of this type; I'd love to hear a Volume 2 and more.

The best CD on the market,

This is by far the best CD on the market. What a voice, what a LADY. My husband is a musician and plays this CD every night because there is no good music around today. She has the right voice for each and every song. As Gary Chapman said the night she was on Prime Time it really grabs at your heart and you do not want to stop listening. Keep up the good work Lorrie.

Wonderful pop lyrics by a traditional country artist.,

It is great to hear Lorrie signing non-traditional (country) lyrics. Am a big fan of her's and with new release, feel that Lorrie has made a succesful transition to an alternative style. Great contrast in styles with the same sultry Lorrie Morgan voice. A real hit!
