5.0 out of 5 stars a classic, October 22, 2001

Although Bedtime Stories is not one of my favourite Madonna albums, I must say Secret is by far, one of her best singles. Both the music and lyrics are haunting and memorable, and the production is outstanding - a mid-tempo hip-hop ballad that you simply cannot get out of your head. Even seven years after it was first released, Secret remains one of Madonna's most played
radio singles. It has a timeless quality in that it seems to get better with age. The remixes are excellent, particularly those by Junior Vasquez, who made some of his best remixes with Madonna before they had a falling out. The Luscious Club Mix provides Secret with a pounding house beat for clubs, and it's simply great. The hip-hop mix by Allstar not only further enhances the song's hip-hop sound, but reaffirms Madonna's ability to cross musical borders. She can cross genres such as pop, jazz, dance,
r&b and hip-hop with such simplicity, and always with great grooves.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best mixes I've heard, May 17, 2000
This review is from: Secret (Audio CD)
I remember seeing a segment on MTV News where they interviewed Junior Vasquez about his remixes of "Secret." When they played samples, I knew I had to get it. So I found it, and it is not disappointing at all. The best track is #4 Junior's Sound Factory Mix. It is my favorite remix *ever* and 6 years later, I still listen to it. Junior's Luscious mixes are ok, but got terribly overplayed in the mainstream and kind of burned me out on them. There's also "Sum Bizarre Mix" which is excellent and Mo's vocals are totally trippy. The only half-way disappointing track is the last one with the guy rapping in it, but the other 5 mixes more than make up for it. Definitely pick this up if you're a fan of Mo, remixes, or dance music. You will *not* be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's No Secret That This Song Is Truly Fantastic!, July 14, 2003

After the success of the single I'll Remember which peaked at No.2 in the US in April 1994, Madonna returned later in the year with a new album, Bedtime Stories. The first single to be taken from the album was called Secret. Released in October 1994, the song peaked at No.5 in the UK and spent nine weeks on the chart. This was yet another big hit for Madonna, and added to her already lengthy list of very successful singles.

Secret begins with the catchy strumming of a guitar. After a short while, Madonna begins to sing her first verse, "Things haven't been the same since you came into my life. You found a way to touch my soul, and I'm never ever ever gonna let it go." Madonna's vocals are raw and rough, giving a very urban feel to this unusual song from her. She then goes on to sing the bridge, "Happiness lies in your own hand. It took me much too long to understand how it could be. Until you shared your secret with me..." Madonna then sings the first chorus as the beat kicks in, "Something's comin' over. Mmm-mmm something's coming over. Mmm-mmm something's comin' over me. My baby's got a secret." It's a simplistic chorus, which is instantly followed up by the second verse where Madonna sings, "You gave me back the paradise that I thought I'd lost for good. You helped me find the reason why. It took me by surprise that you understood. You knew all along what I never wanted to say. Until I learned to love myself, I was never ever lovin' anybody else." Madonna then repeats the bridge and chorus once more, before a wonderful guitar solo begins. It enhances the quality of the song, before Madonna begins to sing the chorus over and over until the song fades out.

The video to Secret is filmed entirely in black and white. Many of Madonna's videos have been filmed this way (Cherish, Vogue, Justify My Love) and look fantastic - Secret is no exception. Madonna walks the streets of what appears to be a New York neighbourhood, with people living there of all sexes, ages and races. Madonna goes home to her lover, and sings in a club. It's a very subdued and low-key video, but it's perfect for the tone of the song. Overall, Secret is yet another fantastic Madonna song from what I feel is her best decade musically - the 1990's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not so secret., September 29, 2006
This review is from: Secret (Audio CD)
Great song, but the cd single contains a remix of the song that is even better than the album version.
The remix is called "Juniors Luscious single mix".
Whenever I listen to this song, this is the version I listen to.
Great buy for any Madonna fan.
Other remixes are o.k also.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Madonna's best singles from the '90s, December 18, 2005
By
This review is from: Secret (Audio CD)
"Secret" was the first single of Madonna's "Bedtime Stories" CD. This single was a massive hit, going top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and #1 on the Dance/Club chart in 1994. This is one of Madonna's finest singles.

Tracks 1 through 4 are absolute winners on here:

Track 1 - Album Edit

"Secret" originates as an R&B slow jam, co-produced by Dallas Austin. This track is so unique compared to the rest of Madonna's work.

Track 2 - Junior's Luscious Single Mix

The radio edit of Track #3 below.

Track 3 - Junior's Luscious Club Mix

This the one of the two remixes Junior Vasquez did for "Secret", and, being the most dance-floor friendly, this is the one that was most often played in dance clubs back in the day. It is classic mid '90s house music at its finest: it opens with a piano intro then leads into classic house beats and Madonna's vocal.

Track 4 - Junior's Sound Factory Mix

This mix is a bit more hard driving and synthesized than the "Luscious" mix, and a lot more compelling, emanating straight out of the NYC clubs. However, its equally as dance-floor friendly. The best part is when Junior loops Madonna's vocals "something coming over..." repeatedly in the track, a cool effect. This track also got its fair share of play in clubs back in '94.

The "Some Bizarre Mix" is also pretty good, but not as good as Junior's mixes. The only disappointment on this CD is Track #6.

This is a worthwhile investment for anyone who's a fan of '90s club music, Madonna, or Junior Vasquez. Junior's mixes for "Secret" are easily among the best he ever put out in his long career.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Baby's Got A Secret Great Remixes of This Classic Song!!!, March 31, 2005
This review is from: Secret (Audio CD)
This is a great R and B song from 1994's Bedtime Stories. This is the first single from the album. She says her baby's got a secret but we never really know what it is. Strong lyrics are "happiness lies in your own hands" which is true only you can make youself happy. "And it took her long to understand" but now she does maybe before she was not happy at all. The original Secret you can hear the guitar do wonders to the song in the beginning and a little throughout. Remixes are very catchy and uptempo and great to dance to. Remix 3 starts out with a beautiful piano beginning then gets really fast with some drums involved. Allstar Mix has some good rap in it with Madonna singing in the back. I highly recommend this maxi single it has the best remixes from BS and you will surely dance your but off. A+++
