explorations... a dark circus... a more experimental side of Eskelin, March 14, 2008
This review is from: Secret Museum (Audio CD)
When facing an album like this is whne you consider: How do you approach writing about such music? Music like this is made to be self-evident, no words can account for it. The profuseness of understanding (or appreciating) certain musical expressions depends on the path of your development as a listener.
If you are considering this musical work as something that may be interesting to you it is very likely that you know more or less what to expect and know why you are here.
You probably know what to expect from the Eskelin (tenor), Parkins (accordion and sampler) and Black (drums7percussion) trio. If this is your first venture, just as well. All Eskelin recordings on hatHut are marvelous.
That being said, I must point out that this particular work is a slight detour from other Eskelin ventures in that it is more experimental.
The question of mood and theme is tackled quite differently. It is not straightforward Eskelin jazz, it is more conceptual.
There is a certain immediacy contained in the pieces themselves more so than in relation to the actual figures the musicians play. In a more standard jazz preconception one finds immediacy in the lines of a saxophone solo for example. Spontaneity. So in a sense the pieces on this album sound much more like they actually consist of `blocks' that are being fit in on the go, in spontaneous fashion. It is somewhat similar to some John Zorn works... specifically his work for film and some game card pieces. But then again, don't expect to hear random samples and schizophrenic theme changes. The work here is much more organic in comparison. It is a fascinating listen when you are in the right mood for it. Not difficult listening but does require a certain degree of direct attention.
