Gr 1-3 Third-grader Tommy Chen has two problems. He has inadvertently damaged things belonging to his friend Elizabeth, and he suspects the new kid, Jake, of stealing. During the course of the story, he owns up to the accidents, discovers that Jake is not a bully or a thug despite his size, and learns that the thefts were committed by a classmate who is unhappy with the gifts she received from her secret Valentine pal. Characterization is minimal; the writing is stiff; and the lessons regarding honesty, friendship, and taking responsibility for one's actions are flat and obvious. Black-and-white cartoon drawings appear throughout this beginning chapter book. Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY
