5.0 out of 5 stars Good Fun Read, December 29, 2005

This review is from: The Secret Policeman (Paperback)
I like fiction with strong characters and at least some resemblance of possibility, and I was not disappointed by what I read here. He knows the technical stuff and how to portray real and strong characters. The pace was good with a relatively intricate plot with unsuspecting connections to Michael Baston's past. There is also the tantalising possibility that lots of the events described may or may not of actually happened. I also doubt if many, or anyone even, will be able to claim that they solved the murder or the mystery early on. Two negative points stopped me from giving it an all-star rating. First, I think it would have better if it was longer with more of the sub-plots explored; and second, there obviously wont be a sequel and I think Forrester would have made a good series character in his rise up the promotion ladder and perhaps beyond. I still recommend this author, however, and look forward to trying his next effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Advice!, December 29, 2005

I'm glad I follow my friends' suggestion to read this book. I could not put this book down! Rarely do you find such a readable novel that is so intelligently written.

Rafe McGregor has managed to bring together fiction and real-life events into a perfect blend of thriller and mystery. I would strongly recommend The Secret Policeman to any reader who enjoys solid entertainment and also likes to root for a book's main character.

And...a good ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smug Hero Kept Me Hooked, March 14, 2006
By
This review is from: The Secret Policeman (Paperback)
The Secret Policeman is a fast paced and exciting page-turner. The characters are credible and their environments real. You can easily imagine being a fly on the wall to this secret mission. I felt guilty for eavesdropping!

Jack Forrester presented himself as a smug young Police success. From the outset I did not like him. This surprisingly kept me hooked. I enjoyed my aversion to the hero and found unlike most crime novels where the main character is highly genial this factor added something unusually challenging to this story.

Fiction sits well alongside fact in The Secret Policeman with nuggets of military trivia thrown in to add depth and explanation to the plot.

The story has an unsuspecting twist that I won't spoil, if I had to pick a fault I would like to have read more around this area but I guess a good book always leaves you wanting a little extra!

Written with South African dialect the story flows well and the fact that Rafe McGregor knows his subject matter makes his stories addictively readable. I look forward to reading more.
