Book Description

Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro follows the young protagonists Hunter Glenn, and Elly Ann through an adventure ripe with adversity, paranormal monsters, secret societies, and most haunting of all, a life without their parents.

The book follows both, the sibling’s emotional struggle from their parent’s sudden loss, as well as their physical journey into a new and strange “home”, an ancient and creepy mansion known only as the Belmonte Estate.

It is here where they first learn of their new guardian, an eccentric old man named Professor Clandestine and the rest of the mansion's caretakers. Tossed into their bedroom, and locked away under the pretense of “safety concerns” it does not take long for the children to hatch an escape plan.

Follow the children as they slowly unravel the secrets of their parent’s true identities, the origin of the strange Mansion, and their inheritance into an ancient secret society of monster hunters known as Seekers.

Now available! Secret Seekers Society and Solomon's Seal! The journey continues!

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5/5 stars for this fun adventure August 11, 2013
By Soco225
Format:Kindle Edition
My thanks to J. L. Hickey for a free copy of the book as part of Goodreads' Read for Review.

I enjoyed the story and its pacing. I originally thought this would be young adult fiction but I would place it younger than that. I can see 10-12 years enjoying the characters and story but I don't think it's complex enough for older readers. The story starts well and an effective atmosphere is created by Hickey. There were several times when a spelling or grammar error would distract me from the world Hickey has created, so I was immersed in the book well enough for the errors to jar me.

Some character tensions are established that bode well for future books and I invested in the characters enough to root for them. I like the kids' uncle and it would be good to see his backstory revealed in future books. Elly is an engaging character and I'd love to see an artist's impression of her puppy Trayer as he's very loveable and clearly described by the author. Hickey also portrays Hunter's pain, anger and confusion convincingly, painting an effective portrait of the effects of loss and grief.

I would have liked to see a bit more about the Beast, given the book is named for it. The 'adventure' aspect of the book could have done with a bit more tension, but this is a good book for young readers as there are plenty of unknowns to linger on, and I love the idea of Plato.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taking imagination to the extrodianry May 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book from the author for free. All though this isn't a story that I would normally choose to read...I really enjoyed it! J.L. Hickey writes with so much imagination. Once you start reading plan on finding it hard to put down!I absolutely fell in love with Hunter and Elly, the kids who lost their parents and have to move away from friends and everything they thought they knew of their parents. They know nothing of their new guardian yet they both are thrown into a world with secret passageways to amazing mystical creatures. Their first night at the mansion so many things happen...they meet new people, hear strange noises, and are locked away in their room for days. The story has so many twists and turns. Def a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars They do exist! September 15, 2013

The Secret Seekers Society
By J.L.Hickey

Are you up for an adventure or wanting to read a great story to younger listeners, then this is the book for you. Some of the content maybe a little frightening to kids that still believe in the boogie man and such. But if explained and read in the right tone to them, I think they will enjoy the story.

The story is about a brother and a sister that become orphans when their parents die in a plane crash. They do have an uncle but it was the parent's wishes that if something where to happen to them that the children would go live with their Godfather, a man the children have never met or knew anything about.

After a very long drive in a taxi the children finally see where it is that they will be living ..... a massive run down looking castle is what they think it is that is surrounded by forests. They are met there at the gate by a helicopter a woman that is the caretaker gets out and introduces herself and lets them in the gates of the manor. When they enter the inside the children are amazed at what they see mounted and stuffed all around them. Creatures some that they do not recognize and other that they know cannot be real. But are they??

Hunter and Elly are shown to their room a very large room with two beds a library of books, a dining table and a bay window that looks out into the courtyard.

They are told that dinner would be brought to them in a few hours. In the mean time there are lots of books to read and beds to take a nap if they are tiered. They are then locked into the room and told not to try to get out. They are locked in for their protection. "Protection" the kids say, it feel more like we are prisoners!

And so the story begins...... follow Hunter and Elly in their adventure as they find out what is living there on the mansion's grounds..... And that something they thought were fake are in all actuality real!
