Book Description

August 1, 2004
Once upon a time, there was a brave and noble unicorn whose name was Shabaz. So wondrous was this beast, so loyal and devoted to his mistress, that he gave up his horn to a powerful magic to save her and her infant daughter from the evil and terrible Dark Lord, a necromancer. He travels through time with his precious cargo, and Birchspring, a warrior elf, to a place they believe will be safe. Two hundred years have passed. Tania, a servant lass, toils in the stable of the once mighty Castle Storm. An orphan, Tania has only her Grandfather Birchspring, and the tired old war horse she tends. Her life is hard and dull with drudgery. Until Tania hears that a new Dark Lord has risen, and threatens the centuries of peace the countryside has enjoyed. It is not all she learns. "Grandfather" Birchspring can no longer contain the secret of Tania’s heritage. The tired old war horse can no longer maintain his masquerade. Together, the three cannot sit idly by while the evil force that destroyed Tania’s mother returns to finish what he once started. Ill equipped, with only great heart and noble purpose, they ride to war. But it is more than battle they encounter. And it is only the force of love that will endure. Love, and the unicorn’s final, precious gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Macaire Has Penned A Magical Read!, August 25, 2004
This review is from: The Secret of Shabaz (Paperback)
This book was positively magical in every particular way. Ms. Macaire has created a make-believe world that was filled with wonderful entertaining characters such as Tania (our heroine) Wander the grandfather elf, and lets not forget magical Shabaz. Secondary characters as well only add to the wonderful cast of characters and the telling of the story.

This was also a very entertaining read. I managed to inhale it in one day and I'm not generally much a fantasy genre fan. Ms. Macaire has managed to change my mind. The storyline was great with time travel, magic, elves, and especially unicorns filling the pages. The pace of the story was fast moving and I laughed out loud at moments, and even managed to cry. This is always a sign of a good book in my opinion. The important thing is you will find yourself side by side with the characters in the book fighting against the darkness that threatened to take control. I love a book that I can loose myself in.

Ms. Macaire is a wonderful storyteller and one that I highly recommend. She is author that I feel we should really watch in the future, and one that you should add to your must read list. Step into Ms. Macaire's make-believe world you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars You should read Shabaz, September 28, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Secret of Shabaz (Paperback)
I really love Shabaz, it's a great story. It's my favorite book in the whole entire universe for me. I like it because there is a bit of romance in it and all kinds of very cool adventures. There's war and everything. In fact there is everything in the story. Tania is a great heroine because she is amazing. The descriptions are magical. It's like you can have the image of the story in your head while you're reading, it's so realistic. Kids of all ages will love this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent young adult fantasy, September 7, 2004
This review is from: The Secret of Shabaz (Paperback)
For seventeen years Tania and her grandfather the elf Birchspring lived at Castle Storm as servants to Lord and Lady Enguarand. The castle was once a mighty stronghold but during the last two centuries, the owners let it decay as the world has been at peace. Rumors sweep the land that a new Dark Lord has arisen in the North. Sir Rengal comes to Castle Storm to tell them that Lord Yalinka of Tattinggil is raising an army to defeat the necromancer; he wants one of Lord Irenstone's descendents to enlist for the cause.

Tania learns that Birchspring is not her grandfather and that her father was the first Dark Lord who married her mother; her mom died to defeat him. Their horse Shabaz is a unicorn who gave up his horn to transport the elf and Tania two centuries into the future because that is what her mother wanted. Tania masquerades as a boy and enlists in the elfin and human army in the Golden Forest. It is only when she is injured and sent to Lord Yalinka to recover does she discover the truth about her parents and the new Dark Lord.

This young adult fantasy will also appeal to all fans of Tolkien and Terry Brooks. Jennifer Macaire is a very visual writer who writes entire scenes that come alive in the mind's eye. THE SECRET OF SHABAZ has magic, romance and a bit of mystery imbued into the story line so it will appeal to a variety of readers. This reviewer would like to see more books starring Shabaz, a unicorn who is prepared to give up his life to keep the world safe.
