Book Description

July 2, 2002
Light and shadow belong together. Yet the increasing number of artificial light sources on earth are resulting in continuously decreasing zones of shadow and darkness. In architecture, the growing use of glass and other translucent layers questions the very significance of shadows. Do they protect against or cause a loss of brightness? Do we even need shadows today at all? The Secret of the Shadow explores these "holes in the light" through perceptual psychology, historical accounts of their use in architectural teaching, and an overview of their role in classical modern architecture. Additionally, 50 "shadow seekers" from around the world, including Pritzker Prize-winning architects Tadao Ando and Sverre Fehn, contributed a work of their own that reveals the importance of shadows in contemporary architectural concepts.

About the Author

HElEne Binet was born in 1959 and is of both Swiss and French descent. She turned to architectural photographing 1986, and since then has worked with Zaha Hadid, John Hejduk, Daniel Liebeskind, St. John and Caruso, Ben van Berkel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Peter Zumthor, and others.

Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa founded SANAA in 1995. They are finalists for the competition to design the New Museum of Contemporary Art's new headquarters on the Bowery in New York City.

Zaha Hadid, born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1950, began her study of architecture in 1972 at the Architectural Association (AA) in London, and was awarded the Diploma Prize in 1977. She then joined the Office of Metropolitan Architectur, began teaching at the AA with Rem Koolhaus and Eliza Senghelis, and later led her own studio at the school. Her winning entry for The Peak Club, Hong Kong, in 1983 was followed by first-place awards in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Cardiff, London, Cincinnati, Rome, Salerno, Innsbruck, and Wolfsburg. Completed projects include the Fire Station and LF one in Weil am Rhein, Germany, and the Mind Zone at the Millenium Dome in London. Her most recent installations are Addressing the Century at the Hayward Gallery in London and stage sets for the Pet Shop Boys World Tour and the Charleroi Dance Company in Belgium. Hadid's office is currently working on a variety of projects: a contemporary art center in Rome, a ski jump in Innsbruck, a major bridge structure in Abu Dhabi, and a car park for the Strasbourg Tramway.
