About the Author
South African pastor and author Andrew Murray (1828—1917) was an amazingly prolific writer. Murray began writing on the Christian life for his congregation as an extension of his local pastoral work, but he became internationally known for his books, such as With Christ in the School of Prayer and Abide in Christ, that searched men's hearts and brought them into a deep relationship with Christ. Writing with an intensity of purpose and zeal for the message of the gospel, Murray wrote numerous books even after his "retirement" at age seventy–eight.

Blessings Far Exceeding Your Level to Comprehend,

There a three main points to the five chapters of this rather short book: 1.) Most believers don't move beyond having a burning heart for God and having the more rewarding and blessed experience of God revealing Himself to us in our prayers; 2.) The practice of the presence of God and the revealing gifts it brings; and 3.) Knowing the true mystery of the Cross. Surely the Cross is our salvation but, more importantly, it is also our sanctification, victory and refuge in a world where we the believer found ourselves living in but not being of it. These three points Andrew Murray keeps driving home to the reader in a style that is uniquely his. Although "The Secret of Spiritual Strength" is a short book (92 pages), don't let that lead you into thinking it's an easy read or is an indication of the level of impact it will have on you as a Christian. Without a doubt, the reader will find the need to read, re-read and yet re-read it again. I can't image that I'll ever be "finished" with reading it, knowing the wonderful blessings from God it brings when incorporating the principles it ascribes.

I was put off, in spite of my admiration for Andrew Murray's writings, by the practice of spiritual exercises. Having followed the "mystical" for a short period of time when I was a new Christian, many years ago, this was too closely alighed with that in my mind.
I can speak only for my own generation, and think probably it was true in all past generations, but I believe many Christians want feelings, actually physical in some cases, to confirm the reality of God's presence. If one needs feelings for proof, where does faith come in? And then obedience? I was truly disappointed, but still have two more of Murray's books to read.
