One of the very best of its type, July 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Secret Splendor: The Journey Within (Paperback)
I've been unable to find out much about the author, who died before this book was originally published in 1974. He was apparently a very unusual character, a bit of a drifter and a misfit. He tinkered with the book until his death, and it was published through the efforts of a friend who had the sole surviving copy of the manuscript. The author was entirely self-educated in regard to spiritual matters, but he obviously read widely, thought deeply and had a definite spiritual awakening (which he describes). The book is extremely well-written; you need not fear that this will be anything like the New Age fluff published today. It's fairly short (128 pages in my copy) but packed with insights. Based on a great deal of reading and study of my own, I'm impressed that this author has nailed "What It's All About" as clearly and concisely as anyone I've encountered. His basic thesis is that Ultimate Reality is beyond the ability of our rationale, thinking minds to grasp and can only be discovered intuitively. His thinking is very much in line with the idea of "Cosmic Consciouness," as described in the book of that title by Richard Maurice Bucke (and his awakening was of precisely the sort described in Bucke's book). My brief description doesn't do justice to the depth of the author's thinking, but suffice it to say that you owe it to yourself to read and reread this if you consider yourself any sort of a "seeker."

Perhaps one of the most important books you will ever read., January 6, 2011
This review is from: Secret Splendor: The Journey Within (Paperback)
I want to thank the first reviewer of this book , 'A Customer', for his or her comments (written almost 10 years ago in July 2001) which led me to Secret Splendor. I did not just purchase and read this book now. I ordered it from Amazon over two years ago, and have just finished reading it for the 3rd time
I'm writing this 'review' because I believe this could be, for certain readers, one of the most important books they will ever read and hope my words here might influence any person who can benefit from reading it to obtain a copy.
I actually came back to this page on Amazon now, after my 3rd reading of the book, to see what comments other readers have left the past two years since I purchased it. It's a bit sad to see that such a wonderful and important book has received so little attention. Or hopefully it is simply that this book is widely read and appreciated but its readers are not the type to post reviews.
Since I first read Cosmic Consciousness by Bucke several years ago I have purchased other books which I thought might give me insight into what is called 'enlightenment'. Unfortunately there is no lack of commercial hogwash on mysticism written by authors from many countries. Some of those books have many raving 4-star reviews, so maybe it's a good thing there are only three reviews to date here for Secret Splendor, including mine, and another which is concerned with delivery time.
I believe after you have read Secret Splendor you will agree that the author is truthful, sincere and immensely instructive, the real deal. He died at a relatively old age and his book was published posthumously with the help of a friend. Obviously, the author was not interested in publishing this to make money. He did not want to become a 'guru' with a lucrative publishing career.
In the introduction the publisher says that the author was constantly revising Secret Splendor to make the book clearer. I can't imagine a book being any clearer on this subject, the most important of all subjects.
Has what this author written brought me to enlightenment? No. But it has given me hope, and also advice - wise words and ideas. I'm a businessman making my living in a very material world and I have my doubts that I will ever break on through to the other side. But sometimes I feel that it is possible. What I have assimilated from this book has reinforced this feeling.
Oh yes, don't be put off by the word 'secret' in the title. It isn't used here in the sense of 'reserved only for the select'. It is used in the sense of 'mysterious'.
