Soulless Surfing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Secret Spot (Paperback)
Michael E. DeGregorio's attempt to entrance the reader with thewonder and majesty of the ancient sport of surfing falls woefullyshort. The literary quality of "The Secret Spot", DeGregorio's second novel, is roughly on par with preadolescent fiction such as "The Baby-sitters Club", though it lacks the plot line, character development, and grammatical quality of even such elementary literature. The dialog is contrived, with little resemblance to the language of actual teenage surfers which is less philosophical, more crude, and ultimately more real. Kem Nunn's "Tapping the Source" and "The Dogs of Winter" offer a more genuine glimpse of surf culture, explored with all of the essential elements of a satisfying read. Non-fiction works such as Daniel Duane's "Caught Inside" and the Greg Noll biography "Da Bull" also provide access to the spirit and soul of surfing. "Secret Spot" is an amateurish effort which bears no relationship to these excellent examples of the genre of surf literature. The introduction, written by the wife of modern surf legend Wingnut, is insightful and well written. It's all downhill from there. END

Real Story for Real Surfers,
By
This review is from: Secret Spot (Paperback)
I've written, read and participated in surfing since 1964. I've been captain of Greg Noll's surf team and surfed in contests all over the world. Surfing is a unique activity and finding your own "Secret Spot" is like finding the Holy Grail.DeGregorio is a master of the surf story and his latest work, "Secret Spot" captures what it's like to be a true surfer. Anyone who is a true surfer will grasp this book for what it is: a book to entertain, bringing a smile and a bit of "Stoke" to the reader. This book is a must-read for all surfers who seek their own spot to glide upon a perfectly peeling wall of water with just a friend or two. To non-surfers: here's your chance to see what real surfing is all about. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who knows about surfing or wants to know about real surfing.
