3.0 out of 5 stars 5 star content..
A friend loaned me this book at just the time I needed to hear what it shared.. and it is an incredible book, which I have subsequently bought for various friends.. On the content of the book alone, I would rate this an unequivocal 5 stars. It is powerful, and it's message is an important one for all of us to hear.. The exercises at the back are brilliant...

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping a relationship alive is a continuous challenge, December 21, 1999

This review is from: The Secret of Staying in Love: Loving Relationships Through Communication (Paperback)
This is one of the better books on communication and building and keeping relationships alive. In this busy world we have created we need to be more creative in our relationships. John Powell has put together steps that lead to a more accepting and non-judgmental way of life. First and foremost we need to spend time in solitude and silence and listen to our own inner world. We cannot reach out to others to form a relationship if we are not in touch with ourselves. We will have nothing important to offer one another unless we become aware of our feelings, our thoughts, our spirit. We will offer nothing to a relationship except opinions, beliefs etc. Listening with an open mind and heart is the way to the secret of staying in love. Another exceptional author on this subject is John A. Sanford and his books: Between People: Communicating One-To-One and The Invisible Partners : How the Male and Female in Each of Us Affects Our Relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving and simple philosophy, February 17, 2000
By
This review is from: The Secret of Staying in Love: Loving Relationships Through Communication (Paperback)
This is a beautiful and simply written book. If you can get over the bad 70s photography and book jacket design, I think you'll find a lot worth celebrating in this quick read. It goes down easily, like comfort food. Powell's writing style is gentle and nurturing. I've read and re-read this book, underlining particularly insightful passages each time I read. It's a book you'll pick up and loan out again and again.

This is a wonderful book that explores how to really love and be loved. To find fulfillment in life instead of merely getting by! I love this book - it has really helped me and many others that I know!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for those who need to learn how to love themselves, October 28, 1998
This review is from: The Secret of Staying in Love: Loving Relationships Through Communication (Paperback)
The author has wonderful insight on not only how to make a relationship with another person - whether it be a spouse, lover, parent, sibling or friend - work, but also how to love the most difficult person to love - yourself. It is hard to put this book down once you pick it up; it is well-written and flows nicely. It helped me through a difficult breakup and was instrumental in guiding me to self-love and acceptance. A must-read!

I recently learned, however, that John Powell has admitted to sexual abuse perpetrated against a number of young girls/young women under his care.. I am shocked, saddened and sickened by what I have learned, and it has tainted my perception of his books.

If we human beings ever had a manual, this is the one to use to guide ourselves, I think there are a lot of other books relating to the matter, but this the only one we will ever need.

I'm not easily impressed, I have read a lot in my life, from religous to esoteric, and this is "The Book".

5.0 out of 5 stars Share this one with your friends!!!!, May 22, 2006
I read this book at a time when I felt my relationship was falling apart. Powell's wise insights into the value of communication, honesty, and talking things over when every ounce of your being - save one - says to give up gave me the strength to re-examine my thoughts and feelings. I took the advise he gave and now, six months later, feel changed for the better. My relationship is thriving, and my understanding and (most importantly) appreciation and love of my boyfriend is much greater. I would recommend this book to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading, October 22, 2001

This review is from: The Secret of Staying in Love: Loving Relationships Through Communication (Paperback)
This book is awesome and should be required reading for everyone. Yes, it's written by a priest, but the 'religious' references are minimal and don't in any way detract from the message of the book - unless you choose to let them do so. I've given many to friends and will continue to do so ... very powerful message, yet easy to read, understand and apply the principles. An immeasurable gift to give to yourself or to others.
