Book Description

Teddies don’t have claws — at least not real ones. That’s what Waldo was thinking as he watched his best friend turn into a Were-bear by the moonlight. Waldo had no idea that a string of events would unwind all because he and Bobby Bear were caught going after the milk in the fridge by James, a stay-at-home dad trying to write his first book. Nothing happens in the teddy world that the Council doesn’t find out about because of the Teddy Network; and "no moving in front of a human" is the first rule of the Teddy Code. It’s only a matter of time before a punishment is determined for the two bears — but what and when? Sometimes the waiting can be worse than the punishment itself. Fluffy hasn’t been heard from since he was caught moving.
James begins to write about the daily adventures of Bobby Bear and Waldo not realizing the harm that he may be causing to the Secret Teddy Society.

Waldo’s timing for breaking the Code couldn’t have been worse! The teddy world had been quiet for the last hundred years or so, but that is about to change. The Teddy Council is facing the evils of power and corruption, a product of human influence. Ballinger is convinced that Theodore is too old to run the Council and will stop at nothing to prove it.

This book provides a rare look inside a secret culture we know very little about.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Writing a teddy bear book and story was not my original intention, it just happened. Based from real events, it did start out being a children's book. However, somewhere along the way I forgot who I was writing this for and began dealing with a more serious nature and tone of consequence for your actions. Why can't a teddy bear book be more dramatic? As I continued writing, the story took a darker turn yet kept a childlike nature because of the subject matter. This has been the stumbling block for Secret Teddy Society: what is the audience? Will adults or young adults dismiss STS because it is perceived as a kids book? I was delighted in some early reviews on Amazon. Adults were commenting that the story was more than they expected. It held and even captivated their attention. Wonderful! But how do I tell others?
Deciding to self-publish has been more than challenging. It has been down-right discouraging. So much so that I forgot why I started writing this story in the first place. Me. I wanted to write for me. But after laboring for almost three years I became so invested in the book that I wanted it to succeed, now!

Realization: I chose self-publishing because I do not want to jump through the hoops or receive the constant rejection from publishers and agents. I simply wanted to write a good story and put it out there for others to find and enjoy the way I do. I had forgotten that.

Secret Teddy Society: Breaking The Code is a book that expresses the human condition of emulation. The influence we have over the people that look up to us. Teddies are brought to life through the love and contact from humans. Once they "wake", they learn by watching and copying you, good or bad.
Here's a question for you: Do you trust your teddy bear?
If you want an answer, then look in the mirror and ask that question of yourself. They are you.
This story is about love, courage, loyalty and dealing with the consequence for your actions. This isn't JUST a teddy bear story.
Enjoy!

From the Inside Flap

From the inside flap of the Hardcover book only:
Secret Teddy Society is a book that will appeal to anyone who still believes in a world that lives outside the peripheral vision. The struggle between good and evil and right and wrong are not exclusive to the human world. This secret culture observes human behavior in our most private moments, emulating and copying actions and emotions, all the while, maintaining a hidden existence.
There are consequences to your actions, even for teddies. Waldo and Bobby Bear are about to find out what happens when you break the trust of the Teddy Code.
The lure of adventure along with a slight addiction to milk pushes the two young bears into the human world where they find their loyalty to both their human family and the Secret Teddy Society tested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Curl up with your favorite Teddy! February 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was not what I expectedd! In fact, it was so much better than what I expected! It was at times funny, sometimes sad, and sometimes scarry. But it all added up to be a great story for adults and kids of all ages. I mean who doesn't love a Teddy Bear? I loved that it even included a brief history of how the first Teddy came into being. You could not help but get caught up in the secret lives of the Teddies, Waldo and Bobby Bear and their owners Bobbie, and James. At times during this story, I found that I was holding my breath to find out what came next. I encourage everyone to cuddle up with their favorite Teddy and enjoy this wonderful story! Oh, and I bet after you finish it, you will never see your favorite Teddy in the same way again!

This book was wonderfully written and I hope to read more of J.S. Gilmore's work! I could not help but feel like he poured his heart and soul into this book and it truly came through in his writing!

More About the Author

Observation and mimicry have been my tools of learning. I have become a thief of character. I find things about people that I admire and steal those positive attributes, quickly disguising them as my own.

Quick story: In speaking with an old family friend one day I realized that he was leaning forward so he could hear me. His eyes were focused on mine when an awareness emerged. By nothing more than listening intently to what I was saying - he gave me a sense of importance, of consideration. Noticing this affect was important. Making others feel this way became my personal goal. Listening to others in the same manner, simply put, is considerate. So I stole that from him and have made it mine.

Being preached to has a negative affect on me. I figure others are the same. So, I don't preach. Besides, I don't really have anything to say. But I can be myself and hope that it has a positive impact on those that observe. Just like my mom and dad did with me. Their actions were louder than their words.

My new book is really about actions over words. The Secret Teddy Society is about teddy bears that come to life. But it's more about who they are and how they got that way. They watch and learn everything from us. While we think we're alone, they're watching. They copy and emulate the person they love the most much like our children. Sprinkled with wonderful situations of life, this book is aimed at anyone who believes in life that lives outside our peripheral vision. It may be about teddy bears but when they meet up with an alley bum in the city they learn about personal choices and responsiblities of your actions. I had so much fun writing this book that I think I'll write another.

I hope to make an impact on you. Hopefully, a good one.
