Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Historians have believed for eighteen hundred years that Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine, found the True Cross and Crown of Thorns in 323 A.D.

The experts are wrong.

Ancient manuscripts unearthed in a Warsaw museum might skew the beliefs on which many of the world's leading religions are founded. The discovery in Poland sparks a quest to find a supposedly  mythical, secret Gospel and ancient Koran text believed hidden in Spain centuries ago. Two young scholars follow a path forged by King John of Poland and later by Ponce de Leon to America. The records indicate that Ponce de Leon purportedly secreted the Crown of Thorns and other valuable treasure in the New World.

There are those that wish them dead before they succeed in their quest that could ultimately change two of the world major religions and eliminate the head of the Catholic Church.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping Thriller full of Twists June 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Secret of the Thorns is an amazingly satisfying thriller, especially coming from a first-time author. The premise, based in real history, is intriguing and very believable. The plot and sub-plots are full of twists and surprises. This story keeps you riveted until the very end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story June 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a good story but the version I read needs some improvement in editing. Early on there were repeated sentences that disrupted the flow for me. And while someone at least did a spellcheck there were still annoying errors found. As for characters, the story uses a brother and sister team as the main characters but I found the role of the priest better flushed out. I would have given 4 stars but found the plot marred by the edits needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Horrendously sloppy editing September 25, 2013

Great plot but absolutely appalling editing: one or more mistakes on every page! Really undermines the value of the book. Shame.

I absolutely loved this book! I give it a 4 1/2 because it took me so long to read it. Don't really know why the slow start. Normally I gulp down this time of genre in two days, because it usually has all the fascinating intrigues I so pursue. But, this one took me awhile to realize it had all it needed to wet my appetite for adventure, lost treasure, secret codes, hidden places, secret societies, and murder. The journey was a little long, with much struggle, but in the end it greatly satisfied! So many different connections between all the characters made it a little hard for me to know who belonged to which group. Or maybe, rather, who were the good guys and who were the bad. But, that is what a great book does!
I totally liked the brother and sister duo, but her need for a sexual encounter ever so often irritated me! Who in danger would think that to be a necessity? When on the run, food and sleep, but sex?
The ending was glorious! Everything resolved to my satisfaction. But, there is another book coming to further the adventure, it seems. Let that not detract you from reading this one, as all was finished and complete for me. Great read that I would highly recommend, as nothing controversial in the line of trying to reprogram religious beliefs. Get it, read it and enjoy it! Great job, Mr. Tom Haase!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great first book May 28, 2013

A fine first effort by a promising new author. He understands well the hierarchy, problems and opportunities faced by the Catholic church. His action scenes read like he has been there and done that. The suspense builds to an unpredictable ending. He has improved his original editing and I look forward to his second book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well, not great, but not awful. August 12, 2013
By ATM
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A number of the scenes were nicely paced. A few twists were unexpected. But I couldn't get over having a heroine who trained as an Army Ranger make stupid mistakes over and over again. I can suspend disbelief for the sake of a story line, but to have characters that are supposed to be trained and smart act like idiots is unacceptable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great action-packed thriller with lots of history July 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Grabbed my attention from the first page to the very last, couldn't put it down and read almost non-stop to find out what happens. Action packed international episodes at the intersection of history, religion, politics, greed, loyalty, treachery, friendship... connected and blended with with leaps of time to real story lines from thousands of years of history... weave a fascinating, believable story. The historical context is so true or plausible to leave me wondering: is this a novel or did it really happen? Can't wait for Book 2!

Poorly written, shallow character development. The only suspense was how much more there was left in the book to read as the pages were not numbered.

I enjoyed the book although it seemed a little slow at times and I have no idea why the author threw in some of the personal conflicts unless it was an attempt to shock the reader. Read more
