Editorial Reviews

Review

Thompson delivers the goods. This book is my bedtime reading companion. Awesome! Fantastic illustrations! So that's how it happened. Every page is a delight. The more I read Secret Voyages--the better it gets. Truthful history is certainly more exciting than fiction. I loved the way you ended the book. ----Statements from a panel of local readers.

About the Author

Gunnar Thompson has been called the "Sherlock Holmes of American History" and "the leading expert" on voyages to America before Columbus. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Illinois, he discovered proof that Chinese voyagers brought the Taoist Omnibus Power Sign to Mexico circa 500 BC. In May of 2005, he spoke at the Library of Congress. In 2006, he was called to Beijing to authenticate a 1418 Ming Map showing the New World. Indian statesman Vine Deloria, Thor Heyerdahl, Philip Phillips, Betty Meggers, and Gavin Menzies have all praised the author's cutting edge research. A popular public speaker and humorist, he has appeared on US, Chinese, Japanese, Norwegian, and British educational television.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to his usual standards, February 15, 2007
By
This review is from: Secret Voyages (Perfect Paperback)
All of Gunnar Thompson's previous books are well worth reading. This one contains many interesting insights. However, it not up to his usually standard of academic excellence.

Secret Voyages relies primarily on many speculative claims. He offers little evidence in support of the narrative. It makes a good story but how much of it is true?

When Thompson injects invective into his text, he diminishes its credibility. His speculation about Jesus not dying on the cross is part and parcel of the long standing freemason/rosicrucian Satanist contention. His statements about mystics reveal that he does not have any idea what a mystic is. Thus he frequently misuses the term.

His analysis of Marco Polo in particular and some of the other explorers in general counterbalances the flaws. The citations of the many maps which show the western hemisphere and that predate Columbus are valuable, but how about photographs of them to support his thesis?

All in all, the book is worth a look but only with a critical eye to separate the valuable tracts from the unfounded ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Debunking the Columbus myth, August 7, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Secret Voyages (Perfect Paperback)
This is one of a collection of books debunking the myth that Columbus
discovered America, as we were taught in school. Traditional historians
seem to resist all such efforts in order to cling to their mythical history
while evidence mounts to debunk them. I consider this book as required
reading along with 1421, America BC, The Asiatic Fathers of America.
Wonderful exposition. Evidence to back up the conclusions. Sufficient
scholarship to at least cause people to think about how implausible it is
that no one got to the Americas before Columbus.

5.0 out of 5 stars First-rate entertainment!, March 6, 2007
This review is from: Secret Voyages (Perfect Paperback)
Not being a history buff, I was skeptical when my friend recommended Secret Voyages. However, once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Gunnar's casual writing style is easily accessible to all. And the addition of humor makes Secret Voyages a delight to read.
