I saw "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" in the theatre yesterday and made a mental note to myself to check out the soundtrack, as the music plays prominently in the movie and I really enjoyed what I heard.

"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture: (12 tracks; 50 min.) contains a lot of music that is played in the movie, and some that isn't. This collection kicks off with Junip's Jose Gonzalez' epic-sounding "Step Out", which appears several times in the movie and really is the unofficial anthem/theme song of the movie. Gonzalez later returns with a beautifully pensive "Stay Alive", and then with the John Lennon cover "Dream #9", which actually does not play in the movie. Given the huge role that Iceland plays in the movie, it's only natural that Icelandic band Of Monsters And Men is on the soundtrack, here with the acoustic-rooted "Dirty Paws" (the opening track of their outstanding debut album "My Head Is An Animal"). Gonzalez' full band, Sweden's Junip, contributes 2 songs, "Far Away" and "Don't Let It Pass". San Fran-indie band Rogue Wave also contributes 2 songs, the dreamy "Lake Michigan" and the intimate "The Ravens & The Wolves". Towards the very end, we get the song that appears in a key moment of the movie (when Walter, stuck in Greenland, is debating his next move and out of the blue in a dream sequence Cheryl, the woman he has a crush on, appears and plays David Bowie's "Space Oddity" at a karaoke bar). The song then shifts over to Bowie's original version. It appears here as "Space Oddity (Mitty Mix (feat. Kristin Wiig)".

I'm a huge fan of orchestral scores, and so after seeing this fantastic film twice I rushed to get the orchestral score. One thing that I never have done, however, is buy a "Music From and Inspired by" album. Typically they are filled with a couple of token performances by pop artists of the end credits song in a film, and a few other tracks that have no conceivable connection with the film. "Mitty" is different though. Each song here is thoughtfully and beautifully composed, and either has an actual thematic connection with the film or was marvelously featured in the movie. "Stay Alive" is an absolutely beautiful, haunting and inspiring song, giving my other favorite end credits song (Oblivion, by M83 and Susanne Sundfor) a run for its money. Simply transcendent. And that is how quite a few of the songs on this album could be described: transcendent. "Step Out" is just inspiring, "Dirty Paws" is a delightful imaginative adventure, and "The Wolves & The Ravens" is positively sublime. With my Pop in the hospital currently, and my entire family feeling emotionally burdened and weighed down, "Stay Alive" in particular has taken root in my heart, providing that wondrous gift of solace that only the greatest music can provide.
If you loved the film, buy this album. You won't regret it.

I bought the soundtrack because I saw the movie and loved the premise. The music makes you want leave your life behind and step out into the wild, just like Walter Mitty did. If you like sweeping vocals and an uplifting beat, this is the soundtrack for you!

Really enjoyed the movie and liked the songs so much I bought the soundtrack. The soundtrack had the full versions of most of the songs in the movie, so I was happy. Only one missing that I wanted was Arcade Fire's, Wake up, so overall I really liked the soundtrack.

My wife rented this at RB and I was a little skeptical. Of course, I read the short story in high school and enjoyed it; Thurber was great in his heyday. However, Ben Stiller has done some pretty slapstick humor in the past and I just wasn't sure. Well, the movie turned out to be excellent and the accompanying music was at times superb. Other times it was just OK but there was a very nice variety.

Long / short: there are at least 6 songs on the soundtrack that I wanted so I just bought the album and am very happy with it.

Every song fit in the movie, and the songs are still great outside of it. Exclusive songs to the movie are included, as well as some pretty interesting versions of popular songs. All done very well - worth the buy.
