A few words of praise from a new fan of Marcia Williams. I enjoyed this book immensely. What a creative way to handle such a grown-up topic. To be sure, the tragedies of war are not easily discussed with a pre-teen but this book does so in a very tender way with a touch of humor in the text and especially in the illustrations. I buy books for my granddaughter but always read them first myself to be confident of what I am recommending for her. Flossie's story is endearing and smart and the illustrations are full of life and humor. This book is highly recommended.
I ordered this book off Amazon because I picked up another book called "Archie's War" by the same author. Both "My Secret War Diary" and "Archie's War" are written in diary style format with lots of small illustrations and cartoons the "author" of the diary drew. There are many fun interactive aspects of it including little envelopes you open yourself and pull the "letter" out to read, plus lots of letters/newspapers/drawings to unfold. VERY fun for younger readers (as well as older!) The subject of the book is WWII and is presented in a very informative way that doesn't talk down to young readers but still wont give them nightmares. I'm in college and I immensely enjoyed this book, HIGHLY recommended!
