5.0 out of 5 stars Nick Fury, revisited, November 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Secret Warriors Volume 1: Nick Fury, Agent Of Nothing (Hardcover)
Colonel Fury disappeared shortly after the Secret War and was noticeably absent or, more to the point, covert during the Secret Invasion. After the fall of SHIELD and the rise of HAMMER, Nick has not been idle. He has been gathering a team of "caterpillars", people with powers - kids actually, who are unknown to the govenment or the Superhuman Registration Act. What he plans to do with that team is set things right.

If all of this means nothing to you, don't fret. It doesn't matter. What matters to fans of the now-defunct SHIELD's commander is that he's back. Bendis and Hickman have a tight story than unrolls organically and a good understanding of who Nick Fury is - a tough guy in a tough spot. Top off an A-one story and good characterization with Stefano Casseli's art and you have a hit. His storytelling is clean and uncluttered and well suited to the work.

As a long time fan of Nick and the Howlers, I have often been disappointed in the hit-or-miss attempts to make a Nick Fury comic. Here, sans SHIELD, characterization is driving a 5 star story. And finally, the little boy in me is infinitely pleased to see the Howlers once again!

If you're a fan of Nicholas' or the Howlers, you will be pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars A comic that has it all, November 4, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Secret Warriors Volume 1: Nick Fury, Agent Of Nothing (Hardcover)
In truth I do not have a background on reading SHEILD before hand. The back story which is expansive has been condensed so that you do not feel lost starting with this comic. The art is solid, story is epic and there is a good dose of comedy in here that Bendis fans have come to expect. Really this purchase is a no brainer if you are looking for a comic that has it all. Seriously it has a little piece of every marvel subplot all mixed into one MASTERPEICE. I only gave the comic 4 stars because the HYDRA Layout near the beginning was just a waste of space and feels like it was placed in as filler.

Hickman does it again with this first volume of Secret Warriors. If you are a fan of Hickman through his other works such as Nightly News, Pax Romana, or Fantastic Four I highly encourage you to run out and purchase this book immediately. If you are a fan of Nick Fury I encourage you to purchase this book immediately. The storyline was excellent with with a big reveal that took it to a whole new level. The art is amazing and Caselli hits this one out of the park. Also, beyond the script Hickman adds his personal touch to the book that is instantly recognizable to someone who has read his non-Marvel books.

Coincidently I just finished reading Wolverine Enemy of the State which provided some great background to the story in volume 1. I hope that Hickman continues with Secret Warriors for as long as possible as this is going to be an amazing ride.

Finally, if you enjoy Hickman I highly recommend looking into Dark Reign Fantastic Four. If the Fantastic Four did not interest you in the past, this book will most certainly change that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutly a "Must Read!", March 8, 2010

This review is from: Secret Warriors Volume 1: Nick Fury, Agent Of Nothing (Hardcover)
I have been reading and collecting comics for years now and am often amazed at some of the works that come out today. Some titles like "Captain America: Reborn" have left me dissapointed and scratching my head while others can inspire great confidence in me that the hobby will be around long after I am gone. This book is one such "Masterpiece" that will set the bar for high standards in the comic industry. A fantastic story that not only gives Nick Fury the "Bad Ass" complexion he rightfully deserves, but also sets Hydra up as a world class criminal and terroristic organization that it could and should be viewed as. This book is simply amazing and should not be missed. I wont spoil any of it but trust me, after you read it you will search high and low for the next volume. Save yourself the hassle and just by both right now, you will not be dissapointed.

Off the chart characters and over powered heros get old real fast. This series has had consistantly good writing and classic art. Hopefully marvel wont try and fix something that isnt broke.
