Book Description

A mystical Irish tale set in the sleepy little village of Ballydara

In this luminous prequel to the short story "The Christmas Visitor," you'll meet the O'Donoghue family: Maeve, Declan, Nuala and Ava...and Frank, Maeve's husband. Frank is celebrating his retirement when his son Declan tells Frank his startling news. The next day, St. John's Eve, June 23rd, Frank heads for his favorite getaway, a secret well, to ponder how to help his son, and perhaps make a fresh start for his own marriage to Maeve. This serene, verdant little glen has always had a calming, even a bit of a magical effect on him. There, Frank has an extraordinary experience that leads him to re-examine his own life as a husband and father.

This gentle, uplifting story explores Frank O'Donoghue's unforgettable journey toward wisdom...and with a fairy thread in the storyline, makes "The Secret Well" a perfect read for International Fairy Day, June 24.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Moving Short Story June 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
What a moving short story! I was immediately reminded of a James Joyce novella I read years ago in college. Within the first few pages, you will feel an immediate connection to Frank, the main character. He's the kind of devoted father everyone wants... strong and stoic, his every word an expression of care and concern. He will stay with you long after you've finished reading The Secret Well.

Once again, Browne shows such a knack for dialogue and language. Her descriptions are positively lyrical. I can't think of a better way to spend a quiet afternoon than reading about life in the Village of Ballydara. Can't wait for the next story in Browne's series!

5.0 out of 5 stars REFRESHING May 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Okay, I had it figured out before I got to the end. BUT, it was a truly lovely and hopeful book all the way through. Being part Irish, it really appealed to my sense of the magical. I think many people, even those without a foot into the realm of the impossible, would enjoy this book.

A tale for gardeners, nature lovers, and dreamers of all ages, "Little Farm" was a Washington State Library Summer Reads selection. If you like backyard farming, cooking with homegrown food and country living, you'll find Susan's stories and pics at
