5.0 out of 5 stars An Adult's Review, August 30, 2009
This review is from: The Secret at Pheasant Cottage (Paperback)
A quick read... (Also called The Mystery of Pheasant Cottage)

Lucy lives with her grandparents - her mother's father and mother. Her mother died when she was born and her father isn't part of her life. She overhears a conversation that leads her to discoveries, especially with the help of her new friend Ron.

Lucy, through the help of an old woman who doesn't speak English, learns what a relationship with Jesus is. Lucy, in turn, shares that with someone else.

The writing is good and is never preachy. It is a child's book but I enjoyed it. Something I might want to read to the youngsters at school. The ending is better than the beginning of the story. I appreciate the way the author didn't drag from one event to the next, making us live through tedium in the everyday detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars small word of caution, November 27, 2011

This review is from: The Secret at Pheasant Cottage (Paperback)
My 10 year old daughter and I read this story together, and she absolutely loved it, always requesting one more chapter. The story is well written and engaging, involving loving relationships and forgiveness. My only word of caution would be that there is the inclusion of alcohol consumption in the later chapters. While this was not a concern for my family, some families may wish to be aware of this content prior to purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read aloud, February 25, 2011

You can't go wrong with Patricia Sy. John if you are looking for exciting stories that gently introduce values to all ages. The characters come alive and identify easily with people that we encounter everyday or even see in ourselves. These books are such a refreshing alternative to the dark books and themes that are being pushed on kids today. My children, ages 10 and 13 go through these books like water. I would even recommend her books to teenagers as Patricia St. John presents real situations in places that she describes so beautifully you feel like you are there experiencing the adventure.
