5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting Black Metal...
Dark Funeral's "Secret Of..." Is Pure, cold, Christian tormenting, Black metal! This is some truly scary stuff. Amazingly Fast guitars, vicious drum blasts, & diabolical vocals all roaring from the deepest pits of hell. This has got to be their finest release. "Vobiscum Satanas" is a cold hate-filled album as well, but If you don't have this...

3.0 out of 5 stars WOW
I bought this CD for a friend for Christmas, and then we popped it in and I was just amazed. This is cd is VERY good but you can tell its early Dark Funeral because just about all the songs repeat them selves. Not their best, but definitley a good album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second take on this cd., November 25, 2005
This review is from: Secrets of the Black Arts (Audio CD)
Well, I wrote a review for this a few years ago, but have sinced changed opinions. This is some very raw black metal, and the sound quality is really poor. However, if you can stand to listen to it loud enough, this album sky rockets in its worth. At a higher volume, you can hear a much more complicated guitar line, and even some hints of a keyboard, but the keyboard is absoluty buried, if I wasn't imagining it. The most problematic aspect of this album is that at a more usual volume, many of this songs a) sound horrible, and b) sound the same. For fans of the genre, it's going to be a worthwhile listen, but if you're just getting into black metal, you may want to put off purchasing this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old School Feel, April 27, 2007
This review is from: Secrets of the Black Arts (Audio CD)
"Secrets of the Black Arts" might already be considered old school, since it is 10yrs old, yet it has a feel of older black metal that was recorded in the late 80's/early 90's. Even though its a bit simplistic, and over repetitive, it has some great breaks in some of the songs, and its an enjoyable listen for those looking for some simple, not technical black metal.

I noticed a lot of people complaining about the sound on this CD. ?? It sounds killer on my stereo. I even crank this on a little sony shelf system that's in my living room and it still sounds fine to me. Emperor's Nightside lp is one that pretty much everyone admits could do with better sound. I think Emperor wanted it to sound that way. That cold, evil sound that's all over that one. Dark Funeral have taken that black metal sound even further. Secrets of The Black Arts is one hell of an album. Every track is black metal perfection. If you love black metal bands that not only sound truely evil, but can actually play, don't let this not be in your collection. A classic right up there with all of Darkthrone, early Emperor and Burzum.

Unholy Black and Death Metal Forever!

Dark Funeral is one of those Black Metal bands that knows how to make music that will appeal to fans of the genre. They know the key elements to making a song sound dark, atmospheric, evil, powerful etc (I think that's why they named the cd 'Secrets to the Black Arts).
If you haven't heard any Dark Funeral albums, then this is a good one to start with. I place Dark Funeral very high on the Black Metal plate, as they have accomplished what many other B/M bands wish they could. Dark Funeral break the speed limit on every track of this cd and are not boring for 1 second. This is one that will visit the cd player more often. The best way to describe their sound is...a hypnotic wall of dark and furious intensity in organized madness. This is coming from a Black Metal fan who has been listening to Black Metal for over 10 years, and I've heard a lot of it, and nothing has ever come close to this, and probably never will (except Dark Funeral's first self titled CD which is out of print but it has been reissued with 2 bonus tracks under the name 'In The Sign', now that is a CD from HELL).

HAIL DARK FUNERAL......"SAAAAAAAAYYYYYTAAAAAAAAAAN".

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Ineffable Kings of Darkness", August 13, 2004

Quality black metal made in Sweden. "The Secrets of the Black Arts" is heavy, fast, furious, evil, dark, cold, satanic... with brutal riffs and freezing melodies. You won't find here
keyboards, choirs or female voices.
All songs are great. Ok, the word "satan" appears a lot of times... but that doesn't ruin this fantastic album. The album cover artwork is amazing, isn't it!? Thanks to Necrolord.
"The Secrets of the Black Arts" was recorded at Abyss Studios, and produced by Peter Tägtgren and Dark Funeral.
My favorite songs are: "My Dark Desires", "The Secrets of the Black Arts", "Shadows Over Transylvania", "Dark are the Path to Eternity".
Essential in your Black Metal collection!

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre black metal, March 8, 2001
This review is from: Secrets of the Black Arts (Audio CD)
This is about as raw as black metal gets. The good things about this CD is that this is also about as "evil"-sounding as black metal (and therefore any other kind of music) gets, and it is rather unique in that regard. The downside, however, is that the music music is very monotonous and most of the songs aren't even worth listening to. It takes a little getting used to for those not already acquainted with this style of black metal, so don't buy this unless you're really looking to expand your existing black metal collection (in other words, you should already have one).
