When I was first called on to perform management functions by a law firm, I had no idea that I would enjoy my new duties as much as I did, or that I would then go on to a career as a law firm management consultant. I am proud of the fact that my new calling has always been encompassed as an effort to help improve the legal profession. I made the change because I believed I could help our profession in this capacity far more than in any other capacity, even as an active practitioner of law. I have married my love of the legal profession with my love of business. The advice I have given my clients has been colored by my knowing the life of the legal practitioner. Wanting to help her/him make more money by being more effective in the delivery of his/her services, I have, over the years, written articles, monographs, treatises, essays and study materials on a variety of topics for lawyers. Many of these articles have appeared in major legal publications around the country. The collection of writings in this volume is a selection of the best topics and the best articles.
Although there are trends in management circles, the basic elements of good management remain the same. It is these elements that I want to address. Where an article discusses time-sensitive or technical issues, please review these against any changes that may have occurred since the article was written. Your ideas and suggestions for new areas of investigation, new topics and new ideas would be very much appreciated. I welcome your comments.
