Book Description

A journey of secrets, lies, revenge, and death.

Tragedy strikes the lives of two children in 1968. A house fire kills Sam’s father and brother. Three weeks later, Sam’s mother disappears and Sam must grow up with strict grandparents. Mason’s mother and sister die in a fiery automobile accident. Mason’s father moves them to a new city in Iowa to forget about the life they left behind.

Twelve years later, Mason receives mysterious notes and phone calls about his past. Mason searches for the truth about the family he never knew, only to discover secrets that force him to choose between his father and the woman he loves.

Mason and Sam set out on separate quests to determine who is telling the truth, who is keeping secrets, and who must die.

Judge 22, 22nd Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards
SECRETS CAN BE DEADLY, by Nancy Roe, is a well-written book that held my interest throughout. I found it difficult to put it down and, as a result, read it well into the night. Nancy Roe does an excellent job in establishing the characters slowly, and in advancing the plot with ever more enticing details. Her writing is taut in places, creating tension in the plot and the reader. The dialogue helps define the characters and moves the plot along. This book is a real page turner, and the author creates the tension without resorting to unnecessary violence. I've rarely found a novel where the writing is as controlled and where the author accomplishes exactly what she wants to do without resorting to melodrama. Also, her use of details makes the scenes come to life. I loved the details about the villain and how she resorted to little tricks to get the result she wanted. It seems so real! Here is an author who takes real life situations, stirs in fleshed-out believable characters, adds simply great dialogue, and keeps the reader awake past bedtime. Perhaps it is the Iowa location that makes it all work so well. This novel is altogether a good read, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

About the Author

When Nancy Roe was twelve she wrote an autobiography for a sixth grade English assignment. After all these years, and several moves, she still has the tattered and yellowed manuscript that is held together by two pieces of black yarn and three brass fasteners. In the last chapter Nancy wrote that she wanted to be an author. Dreams do come true! Nancy self-published her first book: Organize The Nancy Way…the low-cost, fun, creative way to get your life in shape in 2012. In 2013, Nancy wrote her first mystery novel: Secrets Can Be Deadly. Nancy Roe blogs on her website (TheNancyWay.com). Each article is based on one of these six words: Organize, Read, Eat, Create, Laugh, Learn. You’ll find articles on organizing tips, recipes, craft ideas, computer tips, grammar tips, and unusual holidays. Even her dog Shadow writes an article—there has to be humor, and he’s a funny guy! Nancy is a Midwest farm girl at heart and currently lives in Tennessee with her husband and four-legged child.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Kindle books I've read recently December 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought the author was very clever and imaginative in how she wove the two story lines together until they intersected. If not for some loose ends and the lack of most of the characters' descriptions (what did they look like-- age, tall, short, thin, fat, dark-haired, blond, eye color, etc.?) which made it hard for me to imagine them, I thought this was a well-plotted book. The author has potential and I look forward to reading her next books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Roe Author of 'Secrets Can Be Deadly' September 18, 2013
Format:Paperback
This mystery thriller is suspenseful with many twists and surprises. I found it entertaining due to the fact that the characters were well-developed and unpredictable. That's why it's a hard to put down book; I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next. The two main characters seemed to have unrelated story lines which magically became woven together in the end. I have recommended this book to others. I know they will enjoy it as much as I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept reading after my bedtime! March 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of the better Kindle books I've read - I rarely read past my bedtime but with this book, I did. And the author did a good job of running two stories separated by many years that eventually merge. I'm still a little confused about how some of the family were related despite the family tree at the end (too small on my ereader screen) but otherwise enjoyed the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not sure what this book was supposed to be May 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not a bad book, but it didn't resonate with me. Was it supposed to be a mystery? If so, the whole crux of the "mystery" was pretty obvious from the start, with only peripheral details appearing as surprises or discoveries that the reader couldn't have figured out on their own. It was not terribly written, but certainly could not be called poetic or immersive, at least not by me. In short, it didn't draw me in. Perhaps young people might be fooled by the author's contrivance, but I was left feeling rather blah about it.

2.0 out of 5 stars I read it ...... June 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
So many people dying, no follow through investigations, no suspicions - irritating. I didn't want to finish the book but it's my nature to read to the end. Disappointing!

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't make it past the first chapter. April 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First chapter had stilted sentences and the incorrect usage of to, too and two. Not wasting my time on something this poorly written.
