Book Description

August 1997
Lou Jacobs, Jr., helps you go near and come away with exciting, well-composed, well-exposed photographs. You'll find page after page of striking images by the author and others, each with a caption revealing how the photographer got the shot. And you'll find in-depth information to guide you through every aspect of getting set and taking close-ups, indoors and out. Discover what "close, " "closer" and "closest" images are; how to choose your gear - and save money; which films give you the best close-ups; how to frame the most pleasing close-up compositions; ways to work with the elements when shooting outdoors; how to set up and light indoor close-ups and portraits; where to look for stimulating patterns to photograph; and how to shoot copies for presentation or preservation.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Jacobs offers an excellent introduction not only to macro photography but to any kind of intimate, detailed look at the world through the lens of a camera. He begins by taking readers systematically through the principles and techniques of this special kind of photography and follows up with chapters with good recommendations for selection of equipment and film. The book addresses composition, and there are separate chapters on indoor photography and outdoor photography. This handy work also discusses copy photography, one of the most common applications. With more than 40 years' experience as a photographer, Jacobs's is quite knowledgeable, and it shows here. His illustrations are both impressive and helpful in understanding the text. Written in a conversational style, this work provides an excellent introduction to this field of photography, especially for amateurs. Recommended for public libraries and other general-interest collections of photography.?Raymond Bail, Parkland Coll. Lib., Champaign, Ill.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but do not expect so many "secrets"., July 8, 1998
This review is from: The Secrets of Close-Up Photography (Paperback)
Good book, and it is worth for those who will begin in close-up photography. Simple equipment needed, information about more sophisticated techniques. Some shots are really great, but some are not that thrill. Lou Jabobs Jr. has written lots of photography books and has an awesome background... I don't think he put all his potential on this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Technique Meets Artistry, August 13, 2011

This review is from: The Secrets of Close-Up Photography (Paperback)
Just because digital SLRs dominate the photo scene, don't overlook this magnificent book. Flip to any page and you'll see dazzling examples of close-up photography, learn something worth knowing, or get an idea for a picture. Although the book was published at the height of the film era, the fundamentals of controlling depth of field by understanding your lenses, aperture, lighting, and the distance from your subject haven't changed. Lou Jacobs, Jr.'s book is comprehensive in its understandable treatment of technical information and its insights into composition, into seeing patterns in seemingly random subjects such as, literally, a box of rocks. Importantly, the book isn't strictly about macro photography. Jacobs considers portraits as close-ups, and his examples and advice are nothing short of inspiring.

The used copy I bought for pennies arrived in near-new condition and is now one of my prime references for techniques of ideas.
